Review: An easy solution - My electric rice cooker started overheating and shutting off half way through the cooking process. This, of course, was inevitable because I used it everyday at least once oft though I would have to cook a second pot of rice. Now my big pressure cooker can cook rice too/I prefer to save this 8 quart cooker not take up residence on my counter. I hadn't taken the time to look for another cooker and was using the pan on the stove method. He has no patience. He saw this Microwave Cookware Rice Steamer by Sistema while looking for salad containers for his lunch. I wasn't real thrilled, I think I might be turning into Eeyore. Well, we got this steamer and I read the directions that said not to use fat while cooking. I instantly thought that I can only use water in the steamer to make my rice because isn't chicken broth also have a fat content. I was bummed. I cook using broth and coconut butter and several other ingredients and now I'm stuck with plain rice. Making rice with the Sistema Microwave Cookware Rice Steamer is simple enough. Just put in the right amount of rice to the ratio of the water. I use the normal cooking time depending on what type of rice between 7-10 minutes. The rice comes out perfect each time.I only cook about 3 cups of dry rice even though it says 8 cups cooked which should be about 4 cups of dry. It comes out pretty full and you watch the water bubble up into the lid. I hate cleaning up the mess so I just haven't tried maxing this thing out. After I found the recipes I was much happier with this steamer because then I knew I could make rice the way I normally do. I quickly replaced the water with broth, added the vegetables, seasoning and just a little fat. So much better. So much happier too. I can still do almost all the things I did in my electric cooker: steam vegetables, make soup and stew. I still miss my electric steamer but for smaller batches this is great. I have something that will work for the larger batches. I would recommend this especially if all you are doing is cooking for 1 to 4 people. ## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is the most correct water to rice ratio for brown rice, and for how long? I can't seem to get it right. Please help!**
A: I'm going just slightly over 2 to 1, water to brown rice.  So, for 1 cup brown rice I add 2 1/4 cups water, 2 cups brown rice, 4 1/2 cups water.  Cooking time varies depending on quantity of rice I'm cooking. In my microwave (Panasonic 1200 watts), for 1 cup of brown rice it takes approx 14 - 15 minutes.  if your microwave is less watts, ie, 950 watts, you'll need a few more minutes than me.  It's ok to take the Sistema out of the microwave and check on the rice to see how it's doing. You're only taking the cover off for as long as it takes to check the rice - watch out for the hot steam ...). Take it out at 12 - 13 minutes (if you have a similar power microwave to mine), see where it's at and put it back for 2 more minutes, repeat until done. Once you have your timing down, you're good to go for every time you make brown rice without needing to do this 2 minute check thing. I keep a piece of paper with my spice box on which i mark down what I've done for different grains, to keep track of what worked.  I also often make quinoa in the Sistema and it runs about the same cooking time as brown rice. And lastly, for best results let the Sistema stand for 3 - 4 minutes, with the cover on, after you take it out of the microwave. Don't know the reason why but you get a better, fluffier brown rice - quinoa.

**Q: Is it BPA free?**
A: It is, but the FAQ in the Sistema website has long abandoned the claim that the polypropylene material (as indicated by the "5" code in the recycling triangle icon and the "PP" label, both at the bottom of the container) is free from Bisphenol S, which has a chemical structure almost identical to BPA and is also a strong endocrine disruptor.

**Q: Does it come with any recipes, like beef stew or pea soup?**

We have one of those fancy electric rice cookers which can be set to cook all kinds of rice and a few other kinds of things... it was an extravagant gift a number of years ago and used many, many times until this little, red rice cooker appeared and it was put away. That big, fancy, electric cooker hasn’t been used since. This,little device is,wonderful. Put in your rice, water, bit of salt if you wish... pop it in the micro ... few minutes later, perfectly cooked rice! Simple as that! Even my husband, who struggles with Minute Rice, can manage this. I rate this up there with one of my “Best Buys.” On top of the easy use, good tasting rice as the cooker doesn’t leach anything into the rice, easy clean-up, ability to cook a variety of grains and rices, top all that off with it’s a cheerful bright shiny red.
