Well worth the money
I've always like Merrell shoes and these didn't disappoint. Very comfortable and built very well. They look great too.

My go to shoe and the loop is important.
This has been my go to shoe for a couple of years. Now recovering from tendon repair surgery. The loop let me pull on the shoe allowing me to address myself fully. Without the loop, couldn’t do it.

Solid for the money
Have owned one in brown and two in black (I prefer the brown, but I don't mind the black given they are often on sale). Solid shoe for hiking or walking, though I have to replace the insole for extra arch support (I do for most shoes). For me, the failure point is the inner heel fabric, once it's worn, the heel counter will rub and gotta toss them. If they were able to put in something more structural on the heel, these would be pretty bullet proof (for a shoe). My feet are roughly an 11EE, so I usually get a 12W and these fit great.

An excellent light-to-moderate hiking shoe, right out of the box
I have kidded myself for years that I don't need a wider shoe size--but those days are over--due to the need of an ortho insole for arch and footbed support, I need a wider shoe. Also, I have looked at Merrell and other brands as a high-quality walking and hiking shoe for years, but felt they were out of my price range. This shoe, at this price point, is FANTASTIC. Granted, you will not want to step off the plane and into a wedding reception at the country club with these on (maybe in Colorado?), but they are a solid, all-around shoe for hiking or standing at the airport. The shoe offers a serious Vibram tread, with the sort of support you find in a more expensive hiking shoe or boot; plus the uppers are really tight and water-resistant. As a person who's struggled with the smooth, tubular laces that have become popular on athletic and walking shoes, I found the laces on this shoe to be more textured--and thus, they actually hold a knot as long as you need it!! A final observation: I usually pull the factory insoles and use my own, but the set that comes with these shoes is thin enough, but rigid enough, that you need it. I opted for an $8 orthotic from the local supermarket that gave me a bit more arch support and a metatarsal "bump," and simply use those on top. Otherwise, there's not much shock absorption from the rigid tread-sole material. The combination is perfect, and since the uppers are leather, I can feel a real "breaking-in" period around my feet.

Great for walking and hiking but buy half size bigger.
Love the shoes, but they run a bit small should have bought half size bigger. Bought them before going on vacation where we were walking about 5 miles a day. I have bad feet always hurt but these shoes got me through our two week vacation and could not be happier. It’s now in the 20’s (Fahrenheit) and find them quit warm as well with just a pair of thin socks. Good traction on slippery surfaces too. Overall very happy, worth the money for sure…

Poor quality control.
I ordered size 8W to replace my old pair. All the markings (box and shoes themselves) stated “8W” for my new pair. Unfortunately, they are 1 inch longer than the true “8W” shoes (see image). Does anyone do quality control anymore??? Because of this mishap, I have no working hiking shoes for my trip!My old pair lasted me 3+ years of heavy duty, but now I am skeptical of the quality of new products.

These are decent but not the best Merrill I’ve owned
These are pretty good but I’m starting to see the cracks forming in the Merrill line. I usually buy the waterproof hikers the past 4 times I’ve bought shoes. Apparently the type I like are no longer available so I bought these. These are comfortable to wear and walk for extended periods of time. However, build quality isn’t what it used to be. The rubber tip on the toe is starting to come off a bit. My other Merrill shoes this was never a problem. Also, where the heel goes in at the top of the hole folds over a bit when trying to slide my foot in. The shoes are comfortable though and I’ve worn them for many miles including hiking around Bangkok. Bangkok is soggy in spots and this is where the waterproof aspect would have been beneficial. If I hadn’t purchased 4 other pairs of Merrill, I would have rated this one star higher but my Merrill expectations were set by those previous purchases. I hope they come back and make those higher quality products soon because I really like the products.
