Will work fine on water pipes, gas lines...but I wouldn't use it on steam pipes. I don't think it's extreme heat or flame resistant. **Q: Are these really thin and are they bendable?** A: No,they’re not really thin. And yes, they’re bendable. Maybe 1/2” thick **Q: do these retain their shape if you are sitting on them (put around a 5 gallon bucket as a makeshift toilet seat)?** A: I am sure it depends on how much weight and for how long you sit.
