Lioness: Golda Meir and the Nation of Israel

A generally thorough biography
This is a biography of Golda Meir, the Ukrainian born, US raised fourth Israeli Prime Minister.I knew a little about her, largely because of compassions with Maggie Thatcher, with whom she shared a nickname. This book will broaden your knowledge of her. It was generally interesting, but you’ll be somewhat infuriated with the book too.The grumble I have focus on two things. First, don’t read books about your heroes, you’ll invariably be let down. That’s what happened here. Her private life was dubious, if I’m honest. I understand why women have to be a certain way to be successful in a man’s work, but semi-steamrolling your partner, and leaving your children for long periods, so you can raise money and promote your country isn’t a good look.

Semi-detached
Golda did this and Golda did that, but what she did is not set in an accessible historical context and the other people involved are two-dimensional – Golda seems almost semi-detached from her own life. I have got as far as the Six Day War. This is all but simply mentioned in passing. We are told more about her homes, where she lived, than about the events she lived through. Although, to be fair, Caro’s LBJ biographies were so good they have spoiled me for other biographies.
