It also comes with 2 tubes; one with wider opening than the other. The kid setting limits how far the handle on the suction pump can be pressed back so it creates much less (almost none) suction power. As for its function, if an entire seal at the tip of the tube is created when suctioning, then you may see some suction created, otherwise it does not do much of anything at all. And in order to create any measurable suction at all, you would have to keep pumping fast (pressing and releasing the movable arm of the suction pump unit) to sustain the suction, which is not easy, especially if the operator is an elderly individual.
