The large bowl itself that fits inside the machine is not supposed to have ice cream frozen in it because it can damage it. I leave the empty bowl in my freezer until I'm ready to make a batch and then empty the contents into a Tovolo tub. I looked at other tubs but this brand seemed to have the best reviews, was reusable, and decent in price. They fit about 1.5 quarts and I have a little extra in the machine that I either eat or just put in a small Tupperware dish. I know you can go directly on the Cuisinart website if you need any part numbers for a specific model. I did see extra bowls for the machine on their site and on amazon. We previously had an old fashioned, nostalgic ice cream maker- it was always a bit of a hassle to make homemade ice cream because it required rock salt and lots of ice. This Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker successfully replaced it because the bowl is supercooled, circumventing the need for the ice and rock salt and making this option much easier for cleaning up. The machine is easy to use-we just make up the batter the night before, chill it overnight, and in the morning churn it so it can set up in the freezer during the day before enjoying it in the evening after dinner. The machine has settings for ice cream, gelato and sorbet. We have primarily used the gelato setting because of issues with lactose intolerance. We use a recipe that uses lactose free whole milk, cornstarch (for our thickener), maple syrup and white sugar (for the sweetener), salt, and our extract (vanilla, cake batter, butter are 3 flavors we have tried so far) or espresso powder (for coffee flavored gelato). The gelato setting churns the ice cream at a slow pace and it is done in 30 minutes. After letting it set up in the freezer for a few hours, it is ready to enjoy with a nice thickened consistency. The machine ends up paying for itself given the cost of store bought ice cream and certainly it is much, much cheaper than buying ice cream at an ice cream shop.
