It is waterproof I think because it doesn't let water go onto the bed however if you spill something on it it will not wipe off you'll have to scrub it clean like a cloth so essentially you have no less work if you have a mess like in my case where my son makes messes on the bed I have to still clean them and if he throws up on the bed I have to scrub it off with my hands. I think that they should reword it differently. If you turn it inside out the inside is completely waterproof you can wipe it down clean and the cloth layer for the outside will keep it from sliding around on your bed.
