I thought it was the CANS, but it's not

*by T***A on Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2016*

Here is my ORIGINAL ONE-STAR REVIEW (see updates at the end): I used to have one of the originals that this opener was crafted after. It started to work horribly and I thought that maybe it was just getting too old. Then I bought this opener, which gets fantastic reviews. I have to say that it looks and feels just like the original--very well crafted. My only complaint is that one of the handles has a tendency to slip off. I've managed to avoid all the rust that I got on my old one from wiping the unit clean after every use. If it was only about construction and the quality of the copy, I would give it 4 stars. My biggest complaint is that it still doesn't work. With SOME cans it works beautifully--but this is a rarity. With most cans it will cut about half way around, then leaves a connection, and cuts about half-way around again, so that I have half the can cut on both sides, and a connection on both sides. Often it is even worse than this, with three or more connections, so that I have to pry a section of the lid up and hope I can bang all the contents out of the can with sheer force. My theory on this does not fault the can opener company at all. I think that CANS are just being made differently now such that a hand opener is just not effective anymore. I haven't tested out any other hand-openers to prove my theory, but there aren't many hand openers out there that get good ratings, so it just seems to further prove my theory. If this is true, then I'm truly bummed, since I really don't want a enormous electric can opener taking up valuable space when I don't even use canned goods that often. I wish that someone would take this good construction idea, and just redesign it a tiny bit so that the blade dives deeper into the can, rather than practically skimming the surface, allowing the can metal to bend and avoid the blade altogether. Or maybe that wouldn't work either. Maybe the can metal is just too soft these days. I can't explain it; all I know is that trying to open a can these days is a maddening operation.UPDATE: I have received my new replacement (very nice and proactive customer service!), and I will update my review after I've had a chance to open several cans with it.UPDATE2: I have used the new opener a few times now, and I am sufficiently convinced that it is not the cans but rather the opener that was not working properly. This new one has a much tighter joint, which I think is the reason why it works so much better. If I begin having trouble with a loose joint again, I will update my review so that others can see whether or not it "wears out" over time. I'm very pleased that the company was so proactive to read my one-star review and offer me a replacement, when I was too skeptical to contact them myself.UPDATE3: After many months of using the opener on all different types of cans, I now know that this can opener is fantastic, and it's not the cans that are a problem. What a relief to find a great can opener that really works!

    Perfect

*by J***. on Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2014*

I don't know about you folks, but I love me some good solid metal, chromed, and stamped 'Merica made products. This thing is a quality piece of respectfully simple engineering, There's nothing more to want out of this device. The handle feels great. The weight is nice and satisfying, I said it... satisfying. mmmhmmmmm. Why does everything have to be ultra lightweight nowadays? We're not all 2 year olds are we? They shouldn't be using a can opener anyway!Using this can opener is a dream. The amount of effort to puncture the can is perfect, the leverage is just right. you won't pinch your fingies either. Turning the twistymcbobberthingy is a sheer delight. There's very little effort needed to turn it, and it cuts straight and true along the cans inner edge. WATCH OUT 2 YEAR OLDS!!! It's sharp and can cut you, you need to be careful. go ask mom first. No you can't have a Twinkie, they're too small now, you can have two.I have gone through probably 3 or 4 inferior can openers in the past 5 years. From brands like Kitchenaid and Oxo. I mean come on! Bed Bath and Beyond has hundreds of these things stocked! Well, maybe that should tell us something about these other "highly regarded" brands. BB&B has so many of them stocked... it's probably due to them all failing in a year or two's time. they need to keep up with demand I guess. Now I'm sure you're saying to yourself, "Man this dude must eat a lot of canned goods to kill 3-4 can openers in the past 5 years". You'd think so but NO, I really don't. It's frustrating to me that a can opener could die so prematurely. Not this beast though!! Look at it. Really, I'm not kidding, go look at a larger picture of it. Pure sex right there folks. It looks like it was crafted from the bumper of a '57 Chevy.I can tell already that I will hand this down to my children, and my children will hand it down to their children when the time comes... or maybe they'll just auction it off along with my other belongings in an estate sale because "Dad collected so much crap over the decades I don't even know what to do with it all."Buy this can opener, if not for you or your children, but for grandma Arlene so she can get it for .0004 space credits along with a box of other random antique kitchen crap at Erickson's Cosmos Auction Cantina in the year 2045.
