Review: Not that much - Not that much good as expected
Review: This is my second Drill Doctor. They are fantastic sharpeners. The first one was a DD 250. It is still in use after 25 years. I have sharpened maybe 300 or more drill bits with it. It still has the original stone. I received my new DD 500 yesterday. It is basically the same machine but, upgraded, and can sharpen masonry, and split point bits. Sharpened about 20 steel bits in about 20 minutes or so. Also, tried sharpening masonry bits. Takes a little getting used to but, after a couple of tries it worked great. On the masonry bits I would recommend starting with a bit about 1/4" or so until you get the hang of it before you try any smaller ones. They are a little harder to sharpen. I sharpened bits down to 1/8". I would recommend this sharpener to anyone looking for drill bit sharpener. They are very well-built and easy to use machines. Just follow the directions, and you will do fine.

**Q: does aligning the chuck to 118 also applies for 135 degree geometry and what is the significance of the notches on either-side of 118?**
A: Yes it does. The significance of the notches enable you to alter the relief and chisel angle of the drill bit. By going + you will increase the relief angle of the drill bit, useful for high speed drilling in softer metals. And vis versa going -.  45 degrees is the correct chisel angle for a drill bit. By using the alignment notches + or - you can make the drill bit more or less aggressive. A less aggressive drill has a lower chisel and relief angle. I love mine, easy to set up and use. Hope this helps.

**Q: can the degree of angle of cut be changed**
A: Yes, you can choose between 118 and 135 degrees. **Q: Is the 500X able to sharpen 13mm bits?**
A: I don't have a 13mm bit to test, however I have a 12mm brad point bit and it fit in the collet/chuck with a little room to spare. So you should be able to sharpen a 13mm bit.

**Q: What grit is the sharpening wheel that comes with Drill Doctor 500X?**
A: 180 grit which is standard.

I had a Drill Doctor 350 which was ok but it could only sharpen an angle of 118. I drill a lot of metal and 135 is a better angle for this material. I upgraded to the 500 and WOW am I ever impressed. The 500 can sharpen both angles and do it well. There’s not big learning curve either. There’s a video on using it as well as a pretty good manual included. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever need to any new bits for quite some time.
