## Description

The 95th Rifles were an elite unit of the marching, shooting light infantry that served in many bloody battles of the Napoleonic Wars. Unusually, they wore not the classic red coat of the British Army, but a dark, bottle-green uniform that gave them the nickname 'Sweeps' or 'Grasshoppers' by their French enemies. They were equipped with the Baker rifle - a highly precise weapon for the time - that hit individual targets in an unheard of area for the smooth-bore muskets that carried most other troops. They gained an outstanding reputation in the peninsular campaign and later in Waterloo, battalions that Wellington could rely on. In order to maintain the effectiveness of the companies, reliable and trusted men were issued with a white ribbon around the arm that distinguished them as "chosen men" and who were expected to inspire the base members. To balance the short length of their rifles, they were equipped with mischievous looking sword bayonets, long enough to give parity to an enemy bayonet.
