## Overview

The SOUND SHARK Long-Range Microphone Amplifier is a professional-grade parabolic audio collector designed to capture focused sound from over 30 feet away, dramatically surpassing typical shotgun microphones. Its unidirectional polar pattern and advanced noise rejection make it ideal for outdoor and on-location recording, while versatile mounting options and compatibility with various lapel mics ensure seamless integration with cameras and recording devices.

## Description

The Sound Shark is a great alternative to shotgun microphones. The Sound Shark's collector amplifies sound by focusing sound energy onto a single point. This allows the Sound Shark to zero in on your subject while rejecting unwanted ambient noise.

## Features

- The Sound Shark provides a great alternative to shotgun microphones using any omni-directional lapel mic you have available (not included).
- The Sound Shark can capture audio from 30 feet, or more, compared to 3 to 5 feet for a typical shotgun mic.
- Record a speaker from up to 6 feet as if they were wearing a lapel mic.
- Reject more peripheral sound than a shotgun microphone, and record outdoors with much less wind noise.
- A high quality omni-directional lapel mic must be installed inside the Sound Shark to provide an audio signal.
- The Sound Shark is also available with a 3.5mm microphone (search for "Sound Shark Premium Microphone Kit") or an XLR microphone (search for "Sound Shark Equalized Microphone Kit") Our kits are recommended as the microphone has been proven to work well with the Sound Shark.
- The Sound Shark is provided with a flash shoe adapter so it can be mounted directly to your camera. You can also remove the adapter and mount the Sound Shark to any device, such as a tripod or light stand, with a 1/4-20 threaded stud.
- Nylon screws at the mounting joint protect your hot shoe from damage if unit is dropped or hit by something.
- Because of the feedback caused by it's high sensitivity, it is not recommended for sound reinforcement / PA applications.
- Manufactured by Sound Shark Audio, a Division of Klover Products, Inc.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can I use my sound shark parabolic dish and plug it straight into headphones?**
A: In most cases headphones do not include a microphone element. You would normally need to plug the microphone element, installed in the Sound Shark, into a device with an amplifier that would also have a headphone jack (port). A digital recorder, such as a Zoom H1, would be a common recorder used in this way.

**Q: does the microphone connect to a Nikon d3300**
A: The basic Sound Shark does not include a microphone so you can use any microphone that works with your camera. The Premium Kit includes a microphone with a 3.5mm plug that will plug into the Nikon D3300. This microphone does require "plug-in' power and we believe that camera's microphone jack provides that "plug-in" power but we can't confirm that. We will make every effort to confirm if the camera has "plug-in" power. If the camera does not supply "plug-in" power, you can use a self-powered microphone instead, such as the Audio-Technica ATR3350iS, but the audio will not be as high-quality as with our premium mic.

**Q: Is this designed for lav mics mostly or could you use shotgun and hypercardioid mics as well?**
A: The Sound Shark is designed to be used with omni-directional lavaliere (lapel) microphones. A shot gun would only capture the sound directly in front of it so it will not provide any amplification. There is an explanation of how it works on the Sound Shark Audio website.

**Q: I have panasonic hc-xv981. i want to film for sports can i use it? i don’t understand bout the kit tho thanks**
A: The Sound Shark can be used with any omni-directional lavaliere microphone. If you have such a microphone, you can mount it inside the Sound Shark and plug it into your camera.
According to the manual for HC-XV981, it has a microphone input with plug-in power. If that is the case you can use our Sound Shark Premium Kit. The premium kit comes with a high quality lavaliere microphone, that will work with your camera, and a wind cover.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐ not impressed
*by P***K on April 12, 2019*

the reflector is poorly molded imo. the chassis however is very nice. not what i expected.for the cost.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Made it possible to combine Zoom with in person meetings
*by G***M on July 19, 2020*

Our church has several meetings with group discussions in a large room. We switched to Zoom when Covid hit but have now resumed in person meetings. But several people -- older, out of state, or even overseas -- prefer to join via Zoom. The problem was picking up audio from the group in the room in a way those at home could understand it. A single mic at the front was very echoey. Passing a mic was undesirable. We had some success patching into a pair of built in crowd mics but there was still a lot of noise. The solution was a Sound Shark mounted next to a webcam on a tripod, equipped with an inexpensive USB lavalier mic.. The operator just pans to whoever is speaking. The voice clarity is excellent, even from those in the back row 30 feet from the mic. The audience at home gives rave reviews.

### ⭐⭐ Not great for live sound reinforcement
*by N***W on October 31, 2019*

I currently use an AT8035 shotgun mic off to the side to mic the officiant at weddings, mostly outdoors. The 8035 isn’t the greatest shotgun of all time by any means, but I don’t need Neumann quality for live spoken voice amplification. This mic scheme is nice because it’s generally out of the way of photos and guests’ line of sight, and picks up the bride and groom as well, with way less hassle than lavs, multiple mics, etc. My setup works well, and I get a lot of compliments on it, but I’m always looking to improve, even if I could get just “one louder” before feedback.I was intrigued by the “sounds like a lapel-worn lavalier from 6ft away” claim by Sound Shark, since i often mic ceremonies from about 6 feet away and I already had the cheap but decent Audio Technica atr3350 lav, in fact the same exact mic that Sound Shark sells with their “self powered” kit (Btw, I’m not an AT fanboy- if other companies would make battery powered condensers, I’d be willing to try...). Well, it’s really not great for live sound reinforcement. In my simple A-B test the level was way lower than my usual shotgun mic, which was no surprise, but the tone was thin and far more prone to feedback when boosted to similar audio levels as the shotgun. I understand I’m not using a particularly good or powerful mic in this case, but for a $285 accessory, i expected more than i heard. The AT8035 mic is actually cheaper than the sound shark alone, and runs on 1 AA battery, which is a key convenience for mobile outdoor setups with battery-powered PA’s (which lack phantom) like I do all the time. It wasn’t a tough decision to send this back.I understand that a better mic and preamp might give better results with the Shark, but at that point you’re well over double the cost of my current simple shotgun setup, plus much more gear to set up- hence much more to potentially go wrong. I’m always looking to improve my service, and I’m not afraid to pay for it, but I didn’t hear any evidence of the Sound Shark having potential of exceeding, or meeting for that matter, what I already do.Obviously this is marketed to video folks (there’s not even a way to mount this to a mic stand in the package, luckily I’m a photographer as well so I have tripods around which did work), so perhaps there’s something more desirable for that usage, where feedback isn’t an issue. Yes the Sound Shark is a cool idea and it does focus sound, but the hoops you need to jump through don’t seem to make it an improvement over a decent shotgun.
