I had bought one of these and tried to take it outside and leave it sit for a while in (what I thought) was enough sun (for instance enough to trickle charge a wireless keyboard). It didn't work, and I returned it for a replacement. The second one I tried did the same thing. I was annoyed but not too surprised reading some of the reviews. However... Today I mowed the lawn, and needed a hat anyway so figured what the hell, and wore it. It wasn't working, but when the sun came blaring out at times, or I roamed into a section of lawn when the sun was super hot and direct, the fan kicked in. I suspect the first hat worked as well, but I didn't get it in sufficient direct bright sunlight. Due to this, the usefulness is questionable, you are not going to go from mildly warm to cool. This will only take you from dying in the desert hot to slightly less dying in the desert. I may try one that uses batteries, But if you bought one of these don't completely give up on it, try it when there is super bright sunlight out.
