## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this work with Windows 8.1?**
A: I have not used it for years (got a new wireless printer). I was using it with Win 7. Win 8 is just Win 7 with a cellphone font end and no real start menu (IMO). So try it. First you need to update to the latest firmware. Linksys no longer supports this but I found a link I had which will download the last firmware I know (02/01/2005 ver 6034 apmu08zip) link follows inside ( ) (http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/firmware/apmu08.zip). Unzip and then point to the bin file from inside logged in PSUS4. The BIN file is the firmware. The firmware upgrade tool is on the print server itself. You need to login to the print server through the web browser, select the firmware upgrade option and point it to the BIN file. You should have the print server connected directly to your router with a network cable when you do this. Easiest to manually configure using a static IP address from your router. What follows is what I got from Linksys when I 1st configured to use Win7 years ago.Well the PSUS4 Printserver Utility is not Compatible with Windows 7. You need to configure your PSUS4 Manually.Connections : Printer - Printserver (PSUS4) - Router...Make sure your Printer drivers are installed...Press and hold the Reset button of the PrintServer for three seconds and then release it. This will automatically send a diagnostic test page to the printer connected. Look for the IP address on the printed test page. If you are using a Linksys router with a default IP address of 192.168.1.1, the PrintServer should be getting an IP range of 192.168.1.x as well indicating that it is properly obtaining an IP address from the network. Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer. Type "Error! Hyperlink reference not valid. address obtained from the test page>" on the Address bar then press Enter. In this example, we used 192.168.1.105 as the IP address obtained from the test page.A new window will prompt for a User name and Password. Leave the User name space blank, type in your PrintServer's password ("admin" is the default password), then click OK. Once Login to the Printserver Setup page, click Protocol tab...Select Use the following IP address and enter the settings on the screen below. In this example, we used 192.168.1.78 as the new IP address for the PrintServer. Under Subnet Mask enter the Subnet Mask that the router is using. In this example, we used 255.255.255.0 as the new Subnet Mask for the PrintServer.Under Gateway enter the IP address of the router. In this example, we used 192.168.1.1 as the new Gateway for the PrintServer and click on Apply.Once you are done with this settings this means you Printserver is configure properly...Now you need to Add the Ports on your Computer for your Printserver.Open Control Panel in WIndows 7 and open the "Printers" folder. Right click on the "Printer Name" and click on Properties and below you need to click on "Add Port" and click on Next and in the next screen, click on "Create a new port". At the "Type of Port" prompt, use the drop-down and select "Standard TCP/IP Port" and click next.Under "Device Type" use the drop-down and select "TCP/IP device". The Hostname or IP address for this device will be the address assigned in the Protocol tab on the administration web page. Click the box that will allow the O/S to query the printer for the appropriate driver and click "Next".The "Additional Port Inforrmation" screen should open. Click on "Custom" and then "Settings". Protocol = LPR and LPR settings are: Queue Name = LP1 and check on "LPR Byte Counting Enabled". Leave "SNMP Status Enabled" unchecked. Click Ok and Ok. Once you are back to your Printer Folder, Close all the windows and restart your Computer. Now open anyone of your Documents and try to give a Print Command, and you should get the printout. That's all I know. I can't help you on drivers though. I no longer have them and the link I saved no longer works.

**Q: Does this have the ability to assign a unique IP address to each printer?**
A: Not sure I agree with the other answer posted... I googled the manual and it certainly appears that an IP can be assigned to THE PRINTER, at least one way, maybe also off the IP of the print server. Here is what I read: Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) is a new standardsbasedsystem to allow remote printing from a PC to anyaccessible printer. Normally, the printer will be attached toa computer or other device that functions as an IPP Server. For client PCs, it is necessary to install a compatible IPPClient program. The Client must also know the IP Addressor URL of the IPP Server. The PrintServer contains the necessary firmware to act asan IPP Server. No additional configuration is necessary. However, the following requirements must be met:** The PrintServer must have a valid IP Address. Forprinting via the Internet, the PrintServer's IP Addressmust be external (allocated by your ISP), rather than anIP Address on your local LAN.** Any Router, Gateway, or Firewall linking your LAN tothe Internet must NOT block the IPP protocol. (IPPProtocol uses Port Services 631/TCP.)** You must advise clients of the correct URL or IP Addressof the IPP Server. To use a URL rather than an IP Address, you need to register the domain name for the URL.** Unless clients are using Windows 2000, you mustprovide your clients with the supplied IPP Clientsoftware. If it is not convenient to provide the CD-ROM,supply the setup.exe file, located in the IPP folder.

**Q: There was not a cd in the box for the setup wizard. is there somewhere i can download the setup wizard?**
A: There is no CD. Search Google for the PSUS4 manual. You should find the PDF manual with instructions for setup. Hope this helps.

**Q: Can you use this device to connect a usb storage device to your network instead of a printer?**
A: No, Tim. The PrintServer PSUS4 is designed to allow you to network your printers, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print serving.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent and Easy to setup
*by J***W on September 13, 2007*

I have completely no problem on installing and setting it up. I have a HP240 multimedia inkjet printer and 6 pcs, 5 connected to the hub and one laptop is wirelessly connected. I set up and installed this server by just following the instructions came in the box. After I installed the software driver, it immediately recognized my printer. The only thing I feel bothering is that every PC has to setup in order to recognize the printer. The setup is not difficult because once you installed the software in one PC, the print server driver is already available for every PC, all you have to do is to use the 'Add Printer' function of Windows to add the printer, using the driver that is already installed (it will show up in the drop down list). There is a trick when doing this. When you start the Add Printer function, it will keep asking you to provide a place to find the printer driver (which we need to use the driver that we have already installed, not the OEM driver), but you have no way to get that because it is not in the other PC. All you have to do is to use any dirver that Windows provides. After the printer is added,go back and modify it, locate the driver that we have already installed from the drop down list. That is it. So far I have no problem in using my printer from different PCs. Good price and good product.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Print Server
*by T***. on June 7, 2014*

The print server was installed on our network and worked sufficiently for two years. I would assume that that is all one can expect from this unit. It was replaced after two years with another model.

### ⭐ Not Vista compatable - lousy tech support, non-functional
*by S***E on December 5, 2007*

This item is not Windows VISTA compatable - and you don't know that until Chapter 5 of the intall manual or by going to their web site where they state they have no intention of building Vista drivers. Despite this, I tried tech support- after two hours on chat, the support guy said it was my printers problem. I returned this and will NEVER buy another Linksys product as long as I live. (Note: I bought a D-Link print server and in less than an hour had it installed on one Vista computer and four XP based machines, linked to three different printers- less than half the time I wasted with Linksys)
