Below a certain voltage, it won't conduct or light, but above a certain voltage (between 2-3 volts for typical LEDs) the LED will suddenly conduct large amounts of current resulting in very high power dissipation. Even if the LED does not burn out quickly, it will run hot. The resistor is installed in series with the LED to prevent that. I have used various colors of pre-wired EDGELEC LEDs available on Amazon, and they work very well off a range of voltages from 7 to 12 volts, and draw around 10 mA. The White LEDs are high efficiency, and are surprisingly bright, such that a single one could be used for a flashlight. **Q: can these leds be used in an automotive application? (12v, high amperage)** A: they are 12v, will draw the current they require. not sure your high amperage comment? **Q: Using a 12v source, is it common that the resistor is burning hot almost melting the heatshink over the resistor??? different power and 10 LEDs sofar** A: No, it should not get that hot. **Q: what gauge wire are they?** A: Looks like 24 or 26.
