Review: What I've learned about Castle pencils and other of their offerings. - Here are a couple things I've learned (in my humble opinion of course). Buy these instead of the lower end "premium" 120 because they are a world of difference and don't cost that much more. They are as good, if not better than Derwent in that color category. I swatch all of Castle pencils (I have quite a few!) on hot press paper as the testing paper just doesn't give the full measure of color, etc. Also, the factory tips have some ridges, so I gently sharpen them to get rid of the ridges. This because, as they are oil base and those ridges can create scratches, but easily smooth out when "broken in". Some of the other theme sets, like the Harmonious, have subtle variations in the pigment which actually makes them interesting. The metallic pencils are great because they are subtle. Summer and Spring are fun. Pastel tint so gentle, great for light shading. Shout out to their watercolors! I know, Daniel Smith and all that. But their watercolors are really deeply pigmented and if you do a lot of experimenting you can go through a lot. And the price is so reasonable on ALL the offerings. Just got the gouache and metallic acrylic but expect them to be great too. All-in-all I'm glad I found Castle products because they are really, really good and meet the quality of those higher end products.
Review: Budget friendly pencils that fall between prismas and polychromos- - When I first started coloring, I bought the standard set of Castle Arts pencils (not the Gold Standard pencils), but found them difficult to work with- I thought they were scratchy, hard to blend, and difficult to lay down color. I read some reviews, and tried out some other pencils. Fast forward two years, and I've amassed quite a collection of pencils that I love. Recently, I'd heard good things about the Gold Standard pencils, and decided to give the Castle Arts another try. I've been very pleasantly surprised! The color range is fantastic, and they are a nice "in between" pencil. The color lays down easily, and they have a slightly creamy texture that blends well (similar to a prismacolor) but they keep a sharper point and don't crumble/break easily or give off a lot of dust (more like a poly), which makes them great for smaller detail work. They also mix well with the Castle Arts pastel pencils (which I also highly recommend) and that allows for a wider range of light colors/highlights. The only downside is that they don't erase as well as some others-but that seems a small tradeoff for a nice basic pencil that I can (and do) use often. I can recommend these are a good set for beginners, as well as a great addition for someone more advanced.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can these Gold pencils be used over or under black micron ink pens and are they transparent for grayscale coloring?**
A: They are fairly translucent for colored pencils (this makes them wonderful for layering), so they can be used over ink lines. They are also well suited for greyscaling.

**Q: Can Gold Range color pencils be used on wood and other hard surfaces?**
A: Gold colored pencils adhere to many hard surfaces such as wood, stone, leather and metal. The pencils are permanent, but we recommend you seal your drawing with a coat or two of varnish.

**Q: Can you achieve natural dry blending with Castle Gold as you would with a softer wax based pencil?**
A: Very easy to blend because of the smooth oil base; if you use a colorless blender or a stump on a test patch, you can see the color move onto the paper from the edges of the patch.

**Q: What is the optimal surface on which to use these — do you recommend a particular type of paper?**
A: Most papers will do but smooth cartridge paper is our favourite. Try working on watercolor paper too — the surface has a pleasing little texture for the pencil to ‘bite’ into.

**Q: How long does a single pencil typically last?**
A: Black and white typically last the longest, other colors last for three months at least, more if used lightly. Of course it all depends on how fervently you apply these pencils to your everyday art!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ So nice & great price!
*by F***E on March 6, 2026*

Very nice go to for practicing or coloring. Nice pigments with a wonderful selection of colors. They are not too waxy, nor too hard either. I will definitely buy again. Feel good in your hand too & I had no problem with layering or using them to blend. They feel good in your hand & fit in my sharpener. The price is amazing & I am surprised they are not more expensive. Very good quality. (I haven't even touched my more expensive pencils.) No broken leads either.
