In addition to encrypting all of the PINs, data and the encryption key itself, the Aegis Padlock adds another barrier between a between your data and a hacker. The encryption chip and circuitry of the Aegis Padlock are completely protected by a super tough epoxy compound, which is virtually impossible to remove without damaging the drive.

Review: Easy to use secure storage for client files - Customer support also very helpful! - I work with many confidential clients (lawyers, doctors, etc.) and when working on their computers I need a secure way to temporarily store their files. Being HIPAA compliant, I need to be certain that my clients' files are not accessible by anyone else. This fits the bill perfectly. It works fine, and had enough room to deal with several clients at one time. I did have one initial problem... the drive kept locking every 30 seconds (Windows 11) until I put it into lock override mode. I sent support an email and they responded within 24 hours with a registry fix, which solved the problem immediately. Five stars for customer support!
Review: What It Won't Do..... - I have five of these, and all are working fine. There is no noticeable performance loss due to encryption. From a NAS to the USB 3.0 Padlock I've seen burst speeds of 100MBytes/sec. (800Mbits/sec.), then it settles down to a steady 62 Mega Bytes per second. I've transferred a 2.6 GigaByte movie file in about 40 seconds. The Positive: 1. Because there's no software to install, it works with media players and should work anywhere you use a standard USB hard drive. I keep kid's movies on a standard drive, and my movies on the Padlock. No need to worry about the kids watching R-rated movies when I'm not around! 2. Multiple passwords allow up to ten persons to enter their own password using the alpha-numeric keys. This is very convenient if you want to use your Windows password to access the drive. All other encryption devices I have tried allow only one user password or have only numeric keys. A separate Administrator password allows you to delete or add other user's passwords. 3. Low power consumption - I have been able to use the drive on every computer or media player I have without the provided Y-power cable. What it won't do - the down side: 1. Although you can have multiple passwords, all users access the same data on the drive. It would be a real plus if file access could be controlled by which password is entered. 2. Rebooting your computer locks the drive even though power is never removed from the drive. I have a remote office and I do a lot of work using remote desktops. Occasionally I need to reboot the remote computer, and with this drive the data is inaccessible after the reboot. For me, this is a "deal breaker" and I need to stay with software encryption on a standard hard drive. It would be nice to have an optional software program to lock and unlock the drive.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is the differances between a25-3pl256-1000 vs a25-3pl256-1000f? besides the keypad, what other features are in the "f" ver?**
A: Hello, Craig from Apricorn here. cchristensen@apricorn.com The F stands for FIPS 140-2 Validated encryption. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Validates products for Government use that meet their criteria. Apricorn products that have the letter F imbedded in them have been Validated by NIST. The products that don't have an F imbedded in them use the same encryption chips but they haven't been reviewed by NIST.

**Q: I work with data very few people can see. I would rather lose the data than have it retrievable by Aegis, can the back door be locked?**
A: Hello Craig from Apricorn, cchristensensen@apricorn.com There is no backdoor on these products. The data is protected by 256-bit AES-XTS encryption. The drive itself creates the encryption key that it generates through its own random generator. The drive is the only thing / place where the key is (stored encrypted) and without the key, you can't get to the data. If the drive is lost or stolen and it will wipe the encryption key if it detects a brute force attack rendering the data on it useless.

**Q: Will it backup automatically considering it has a keypad to access?**
A: It can be used with backups provided that you're computer does not put your USB into power saving. I use mine for the express purpose of backups to help protect them from theft. However, if USB loses power, then the code will need to be re-entered. This is particularly of concern on people that have laptops or tablets with power saving features such as a surface. We had issues with the surface devices but this was corrected by a registry key adjustment to ensure that the USB ports aren't powered down when idle.

**Q: What happens if someone cuts the USB cord?**
A: Pretty much the same as if you cut the cord to any electrical device. It won't work.
