Hearts of Steel
Writer Richard Matheson once wrote a story about the possible future of boxing. Where human boxers have been replaced by robots. And where one of the former struggles to get by in this new world with a new version of his sport. That was adapted for the Twilight Zone TV series, in an episode that starred Lee Marvin. Now here's a feature film based on that same story. As ever with films of short stories it just takes the original idea and goes off in it's own direction, thus it bears no resemblance to the written or tv version beyond the idea of robot boxers.Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton. Washed up former human boxer struggling to get by as a manager of robotic ones. Things are not going his way. But then fate offers him an opportunity. A former girlfriend and mother to a son he's not seen in a long time dies. The sister of said girlfriend and her husband want to take custody of the boy. All this offers Charlie a money making opportunity and a chance to get back in the robot boxing game.So long as he looks after the kid for several months.Things do not go as planned for either of them. But it offers Charlie one more chance to make good. In robot boxing and as a parent. Can he take the chance?Any movie like this will hinge on the relationship between the two main characters. And this does score highly in that regard. Thanks to a likeable and charismatic performance in the lead from Hugh Jackman. And Dakota Goyo making Charlie's son Max a smart kid who can more than hold his own when it comes to talking to and dealing with his old man. There's a great shot when they first meet which nicely symbolises the distance between them. The rest of the cast do have their moments. Evangeline Lilly has what could have been a rather thankless role as Charlie's long time friend and possible love interest, and makes her a decent character. And the would be guardians of Max do also have their moments, especially in the last quarter of the movie.Using both props and cgi for the robots does create a good sense of reality.Whilst the story development is totally predictable, it does end with a great set piece that is absolutely rousing stuff [although epileptics beware some flashing lights during it] and is both credible plot wise and emotionally satisfying at the same time. There are some moments of mild violence. And some moments some might find corny. But this ia both an entertaining character story and a fine future sports movie, and it's a very entertaining watch. The disc has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English Russian Ukranian.Subtitles: English Bulgarian Russian Latvian Lithuanian Romanian Estonian Ukranian. It is also English audio captioned. The disc begins with some trailers but you can skip these via the next or menu buttons on the dvd remote.Extras are:A commentary from the director.A thirteen minute long feature about the making of one short scene in the film. Fascinating for those who want to know more about the production side of films because it shows how much effort goes into some very short sequences.A four minute long feature about the making of the robots in the film. And a three minute long blooper reel. As with a lot of these it's mostly people forgetting their lines and being silly but there are two genuinely laugh out loud moments in it. Particularly the first shot.
