Can someone please advise me? I have no test strips is this essential?** A: Hi there, you do need test strips because that way you can keep a check of your chemicals. You also need chlorine tablets to keep your water germ free. The Ph balance is if the Ph balance is low you can raise it, and if the alkaline balance is to low use bicarbonate of soda and that will bring it up. I generally have 2 chlorine tablets in all the time except when we are in the pool, and mix 1/2 pint of water with 4 dessert spoons of Ph balance as needed, the same with the bicarb. But that is why you really need the test strips because all the levels you need are on the side of the container in colour and you match a strip to the colours.
