We Beat the Street: How a Friendship Pact Led to Success Paperback – April 20, 2006

If I could give this more stars, I would. I teach 7th and 8th grade Reading in a very high poverty area. Ninety percent of our students are on free lunch.With that being said, my students don't really care to read. When I do get them to read the class novel, it is like pulling teeth.We decided to add this book to our nonfiction class novel set. We are only on the fifth chapter, but I have never had a class so quiet and interested in a book. I have to stop my students from reading ahead. THIS IS GREAT. What is even more wonderful, is that it is a true story. I bought The Pact DVD to watch when we are done reading. I think they will like to see the doctors in real life.Anyways- I thank those men for taking the time to remember where they came from, and to inspire young people everywhere not to let their surroundings break them.A lot of my students connect with their stories and I think it is wonderful that they can see their own potential through this story.

Great Book for the young person who might want to achieve their personal goals to become a Doctor

Great story. I used in my class and the kids were so attentive and intrigued.

This book is so amazing! I am a speech-language pathologist and I read this book with one of my middle-school at risk students who was in a gang. Every week it was amazing - the chapter we read happened to be what happened to him that week. At the end of the year he got out of the gang and he wrote me a 2 page letter telling me how much the book changed his life. I would highly recommend this book. And he told me to always read that book with kids in gangs - "because it really works".

This book grabbed the attention of a 14 year old boy that hates to read and kept it! Wow...I struggle with getting him to read and this book was perfect. It was so interesting that we both read it and would discuss it at dinner. My husband then ended up reading it as well because he felt left out (smile). Great purchase for leisure reading!

This was my first time teaching this book and my freshmen and I all loved it. The three men's stories are heartbreaking, exciting, and inspiring, and I highly recommend this book to all teachers and students.

The real ness in which each man tells his story . My male students , of diverse races but economically the same, could relate to them. We also used the online chapter questions and I created worksheets for each chapter. Girls also like the books but this was the first book all the boys were really engaged

For someone like me who is African American, 13 ,and is an aspiring doctor this book really inspired me! It's made me more confident in being able to achieve my goals no matter racial,financial, or any other type of barriers stand in my way. Now i look forward to my journey through medicine. I'm so glad my high school made me read this as a summer assignment.Thanks so much Sampson, George, and Rameck ! I wish i could meet you guys in person.Future Doctor
