Review: If I needed another, I would buy this again without any regrets - I find great value in this tool. With proper care, it should last a lifetime. I do not know why desertcart desires that I mention Battery Life; but I will say this model was specifically selected because it requires no battery, has no electronic display or any digital functionality (to fail or go out of Calibration). Best described as, "Analog baby." Accuracy confirmed against a different, trusted, 0.001 Caliper and this thing is closer than the listed specifications give it credit for. If for some reason you cannot read a labeled slide-rule, this probably won't work for you. For everyone else, this is the simple, accurate, functional Caliper that you are looking for. I will leave it to a hand model to demonstrate that the thumbscrew locking operation is excellent and smooth, it has smooth and stiff slide-action (not sloppy at all), nice probe depth and allows grip and control in use. Case and even a cleaning cloth included.

**Q: how do you read this vernier**
A: Using the second photo as example: the 0 of the (sliding) vernier scale is just shy of the 6mm mark, so there are 5 full mm.
And then check where the markings on the main scale and the vernier scale line up perfectly. This is the case one mark left of the 9 on the vernier scale. If it were exactly on the 9, then the total reading would be 5.9mm. But because it's one mark left of the 9 and each of those marks between 8 and 9 is 0.02mm the total is 5.88mm.

**Q: Etched or printed numbers and lines?**
A: Etched.  This is a surprisingly high quality tool for the price.  Do you know how to read a vernier?

**Q: How long are the external jaws?**
A: 40 mm for the outside reading, 16.5 mm inside reading. The precision cutout at the end is 9.5 mm long, and the steel is 3 mm thick. These are quite typical measures for calipers of this type (i.e., they are identical to my digital-scale calipers).

**Q: This divided into 10ths of an inch, then each 10th into 1/4ths ? Each inch is broken into 40 segments.Mitutoyo is only in 16ths. How do you read this?**
A: This caliper measures in 1/1000 of an inch, not in power of two fractions.

Each segment is 1/40 = 0.025 inch, and the vernier scale reads from 0 to 25 (0 to 0.025, really). As an example, the 3rd line past 1.1 inch gives you 1.175 inches (1.1 + 3 * 0.025), and the vernier scale gives you the rest, if the lines match up at 12 you add 0.012 to the result you got from the regular scale, 1.175 + 0.012 = 1.187.

Nice tool. Vernier are not exactly in vogue, but this is very handy in most application. It reads well and moves well. Of course it is not a Starrett or Mitutoyo, but it isn't prices as those and other brands. Buy it for what it is and you will probably be happy with it.

Bought this for rough use in nasty conditions where absolute accuracy isn't important. The calipers are rough but accuracy is good enough. Decided to smooth out some of the burrs and interference with a bit of 1000 grit paper. After a half hour of light polishing they run a lot better.
