I used a 6 mm felt underneath which seems enough on a lattice steel board it works particularly well for synthetics like ripstop nylon - I am a Kite maker I iron sheets of ripstop more than my shirts . The peripheral draw cord works very well with the metal board and the overhung felt giving a smooth rounded edge to the cover. I have not as yet ironed anything wet and normally only use a spray bottle on hard creases never a full steam iron.
