In 1920s Ireland, an elderly couple (Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith) reside over a tired country estate. Living with them are their high-spirited niece (Keeley Hawes), their Oxford student nephew (Jonathan Slinger), and married houseguests (Lambert Wilson, Jane Birkin), who are trying to cover up that they are presently homeless. The niece enjoys romantic frolics with a soldier (David Tennant) and a hidden guerilla fighter (Gary Lydon). All of the principals are thrown into turmoil when one more guest (Fiona Shaw) arrives with considerable wit and unwanted advice.

The Last September
An exceptional film this - nuanced and stylish, and an interesting interpretation of Elizabeth Bowen's novel. The film reflected the then complex Anglo Irish view of the War of Independence in Ireland. However,Bowen's generally sympathetic view of that struggle was somewhat distorted in the film by a simplistically brutish portrayal of the central rebel involved

Bit cloudy in September....
It was a bit light weight and storyline - not much of one to honest. Thought the actors would add more substance, but it was disappointing. Sorry, can't give it a big wrap. Mel.

Events Change Society
This film shows a turning point in the early 1900s. How status was changing, the Irish were beginning to rebel and "place" was not held to so firmly. Events happen that shatter everything they once believed. Fine performances with an excellent cast.

A nice enough tale, but not quite worthy of the wonderful cast.

The End of an Idyll
The Last September is a well-crafted period drama set in Ireland just after the First World War at a time of growing political unrest increasingly finding expression in violence. As the story unfolds, the dark menace of the outside world begins to encroach on the idyllic calm of an isolated country estate. This is a period drama with something rather more to say than the average example of its genre. A superb cast is led by the unfalteringly brilliant Sir Michael Gambon and Dame Maggie Smith. David Tennant ( Doctor Who ) appears as Captain Gerald Colthurst,. Doctor Who

The Last September

Excellent, Lesser-known film
The Last September covers a period of rising turbulence in Ireland, when the war for Irish independence begins to escalate, moving closer to the lives of Anglo Irish aristocrats. Stunning cinematography of the gentrified homes and verdant landscapes forms a backdrop to the approaching war and the turmoil to follow. Stellar performances by Maggie Smith, a young David Tennant (later Dr. Who), Irish actress, Fiona Shaw, Keeley Hawes and Michael Gambon.Cinematic perfection and a provocative and a beautiful adaptation.

Unwatchable
This is a movie with a great cast, but I found it boring and mannered. Usually a fan of this sort of period drama and with a lot of knowledge of this period in British and Irish history, I just couldn't stick with this. I gave up after the first half hour.
