I am new to embroidery but this hoop type are my favourite.  Two things to take into account they do take a bit burst of power to push the hoops together/take apart and they will not take thick aida.  I'm currently using 14count which goes in fine.  The two hoops fitting together tightly and is a good thing to get good tension.  If you want to just try out embroidery or cross stitch and want a thicker easier material to start with then use another sort of  cheap hoop. The wooden cheap type fitted thicker aida but it is really weak wood and starting to split after minimal use.  But I will be sticking with this type. They are great.

Just right for  mini /small X stich. Holds the material well inside the frame while working and acts as a good display when X stich is finished . Makes the whole thing complete
