The guard has to be taken off to use the thing, and the veg holder doesn't work as well as one would like. A softer thing like a pepper, will slice nicely until the last third, when it will rub uselessly against the blade — the holder won't push it down far enough. If one turns the holder sideways to press the vegetable down more firmly, the blade slices tiny bits of black plastic into your peppers. Not ideal. But I now know why cooks routinely risk terrible injuries to use a mandolin — the thin slices melt in your mouth. I loath peppers, but sliced in the mandolin and dropped in an umami broth, they are an entirely different flavor. ### ⭐ Going in the trash. *by F***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2020* After the third use I noticed it was taking more effort to slice and the depth insert kept sliding back making this potentially very dangerous. The dulling blade in combination with the falty insert, makes what could have been an easy to clean design, useless.
