Use a large diaphragm condenser (LDC - requires 48v phantom power) for vocals. Someone said the 57 and 58 are the same, this is NOT true. The capsules are different with the 58 being a GREAT choice for LIVE vocals. The 57 is an earlier design and was more of a jack of all trades mic. Studio recording (no matter where it is isolation booth or bedroom) is about capturing the cleanest signal possible, that really requires a LDC mic where vocals are concerned. One exception is metal vocals, in that case the SM7B LDD (Large Diaphragm Dynamic - no phantom power) is the better choice. Dynamic mics can take higher SPL than condensers. **Q: What is the difference in this SM57-LC and the SM57? I can't seem to find what the LC is about.** A: The LC stands for "Less Cable." As in it doesn't come with a cable. Shure used to sell a model that did come with a cable. As Raffael's link pointed out, they no longer sell the one with the cable. The microphones themselves, however, were exactly the same. So there's NO difference between an SM57-LC and SM57. **Q: can it be attached to a video camera with a cable?** A: The Shure 57 has a standard balanced audio XLR connector. You will need an adaptor or cable that converts XLR to the type of connector on your video camera. Shouldn't be a problem to find one. Other than that, its suitability will depend on your use. If you are using it "off camera" and reasonably close to your subject, it should be great. If you are mounting it on the camera somehow, be aware that it is not a highly directional microphone and you'll be recording most sounds in front of the camera. Be aware if your a streamer or podcaster or contented with a face cam , unless you are prepared to be eating the mic , it’s not the mic for you. I found even with the gain at about 90% on my scarlet interface , I had to have the capsule about an inch away from the mic to pick me up clearly. So a condenser mic is probably better suited for you for that. If your looking for an SM7B type of sound, but can’t quite afford the SM7B - get the SM57, A55M, A2WS - a bit of processing and you’ll get that sound. I have an SM7B , which I love! And comparing to the SM57 and that there is a £300 price difference I think the SM57 is awesome. Although like I mentioned earlier you have to eat the SM57 for it to pick you up clearly, whereas the SM7B is more forgiving as to how close you have to have it to your mouth.
