The spacers fit the 1/2 inch crank set and increase the the size to the 9/16 inch petal screw. The spacers also move the petal out about 1/2 inch to keep the knee from striking the side of the bike. It also relieves some of the knee pain associated with a standard crank set. Hope this helps. (The one side is opposite threads). I have always done my pedals by standing on the opposing side bending down over bike and it is just, righty righty and lefty loosely. **Q: Installed these, and can only pedal a short way before the pedals fall off. Am I missing something?** A: Sounds like the threading is opposite and they are backing out.
