Hey Good Lookin'

The Day Has Finally Come!
Just got my copy a couple of days ago & popped it on to see the quality. To start, I am just beyond excited that the DVD exists at all. To be honest, I didn't think I'd see the day. Hey Good Lookin' was one of the Bakshi movies that really got me hooked when I first saw it. I have probably watched it 100+ times over the years on VHS, so it is a serious upgrade right off the bat.In terms of quality, the movie has never looked better. Bright, crisp colors, a nice digital transfer, etc. It is presented in a 16x9 matted format, which for some may be a problem (the film was shot open matte apparently), but my guess is that when it was screened it was supposed to be matted, so widescreen would be the way to go. It feels much more like a theatrical release now. I look forward to a proper viewing in my theater room very soon. A little flawed in terms of scratches & pops from the original source, but worlds better than any version we've seen so far. Considering the small on-demand run, I wouldn't expect them to spend money restoring the print that they struck the DVD from. I would imagine that if the film got a proper release it would have been restored a bit, but considering the fact that I never expected it to be released, it looks pretty damn nice. Major kudos to Warner for releasing this as part of their on demand Archives series. No extras except for the original trailer, which is essentially just a scene of Vinny combing his hair with narration over the top, but it is cool to see it any way. Again, it would be nice to see this movie get the proper deluxe treatment (with the live action version as a second disc), but I wouldn't hold my breath. The petition to release the movie had a staggering low number of signatures, so this is probably going to be the only release we see on DVD.Would be really nice to see it get a blu-ray in the future, because as great as it is to see the DVD, there is an obvious pixel count limitation that is apparent. Some of the sharp edges look a bit jagged, but that is to be expected when blowing up a 640x360 picture into a 155" picture in my case. Animation on DVD in general tends to suffer from this.Either way, as I mentioned, I am over the moon with excitement that I now own all of Bakshi's theatrical releases on DVD or blu-ray. The collection is complete.

Excellent Early Bakshi
This is the authorized letterboxed DVD -- the one with the actual film title on the box! This is an early Bakshi film, and it fits right in with the others: cool animation, sex, violence, blood, and a well-told story. Our hero is the leader of a street gang in NYC in the 50s. Which is great as long as all they do is party. But when he accidently sets up a rumble with another gang ... he finds out that he is only the leader when he tells his gang to do what they want to do anyway. Things progress from there, with major suprises. This is also a DVD-R and so, for those who care about such things, I must report that it has only one "special feature" -- the trailer. So those "vidoephiles" who buy DVDs for the commentaries and documentaries and stuff like that can skip this.Like all DVD-Rs, this is for people who buy DVDs to watch the /movie/.

My favorite Bakshi film.
I love this movie, definitely seriously underrated amongst fans of Ralph Bakshi's work. I think it's my absolute favorite, at least tied with American Pop.

One of Bakshi's best!
Having first seen "Hey Good Lookin'" at the movies in 1982, the year I was seventeen, I have always considered this a film that connects me directly to my past. I was involved with my first "real" girlfriend at the time, and this is one of the first films that we saw together. That aside, having seen this movie countless times since then I have been struck by it's completeness, and excellence as a film. Bakshi's only film to featured a completely original, and brilliant, yet unreleased, musical soundtrack by Ric Sandler, "Hey Good Lookin'" gives a good look into what it meant to be a guy growing up in 1950's Brooklyn and the role you needed to play in order to get respect, get along with your friends, and what was necessary to get the girl. From the leather motorcycle jackets, the slicked back DA's and the rumbles, Ralph Bakshi gives us a window into which we might look into a past where male / female roles were clearly defined, and a man could still be a man. Oh yeah... and the animation is PHENOMENAL as well. This is one of Bakshi's best!

If your a fan of animation then you just gotta see this...
If your a fan of Ralph Bakshi's work then this is a must have! Besides a great storyline his animation is superb. You can't help but to root for Vinnie the main character. Then there's his best friend Crazy Shapiro & his love interest Rozaline. Even if your not familiar with Bakshi's work, but your a animation fan this is a must (I also recommend a film called Heavy Metal) 'Nuff said......

Great film, but picture quality is terrible though on Amazon Prime for this classic.
A Ralph Bakshi animated classic, in a terrible barely DVD quality streaming print used for Amazon Prime streaming, only, sadly. I give this wonderful coming of age adult animated classic five stars, it's amazingly well made with no budget. Puts Disney to shame, Bakshi does. Highly recommended, too bad the streaming quality of this film on Amazon Prime looks awful, full screen, and just washed out looking. I gotta knock off 2 whole stars for how bad the image and sound quality of this streaming movie is, sadly. This movie demands a deluxe Blu-ray release!!!

This product is a movie dvd and contains the movie Hey Good Lookin'. Don't be confused by DVD-Audio in the product title. It's definitely the movie. The country code is 0, so you can play it on all dvd players regardless which country code they have.
