2 Stars. Would *NOT* buy again.
*Edited Feb 5 & 7, 2020 " I have to change my rating from 5 stars, to just 2 stars. I would not buy again, and I don't believe anyone else should, either."Jan 6, 2020 - I received the unit today. Installation was so simple, it's a smart design. I installed 4x 10TB Seagate Iron Wolf hard drives, all were instantly recognized and worked flawlessly. USB 3.0 speeds were fairly quick, moving 3 TB of data from one drive to another within the enclosure in under 8 hours, consistently 95- 100 MB/s.The external material is primarily aluminum, and very good for cooling. The photos (and other reviews) had me assuming it were plastic, and not great for cooling. The fans are adjustable with a dial at the base, at full speed are fairly noisy, but even at half speed they move *ALOT* of air through the enclosure. I see in some reviews there are reports of these fans dying, if so, I can see it being an issue. But I also see they are a standard size, and I like the unit enough to be willing to replace them if that becomes an issue. The power supply is a stand alone AC adapter with an IRC 320 C13 connector (your standard PC power cable that runs from the PC power supply to the wall power plug). This is very nice, because it means 1/2 of the power cable is cheap and widely available in the event you need a replacement. However, the power transformer itself is made of lower quality plastic and I imagine will be the first component to die. It looks and feels very cheap, especially compared to the overall excellent build quality of the enclosure itself. For a day 1 experience, this is a pretty fantastic USB enclosure. If it goes awry or malfunctions in the next 6 months, I will return and update this review, and I will certainly do my due diligence and be aware of a better AC adapter for the unit, as I am fairly sure that is the "weak link" (and the corner cut to get this unit down to under $80 at the time of my purchase). At this time, I am very, very happy with my 40 TB external box!Feb 5, 2020 - The fans died tonight. It is less than 3 DAYS out of the return window. Pretty odd timing. The drive temperatures were FAR higher than they should have been at idle, when the fan died it really got way hotter than I had expected, and put the drives in serious danger. It isn't worth the risk. After this, I have to change my rating from 5 stars, to just 2 stars. I would not buy again, and I don't believe anyone else should, either.**Feb 7, 2020 - The fan itself was actually fine. However, the power port on the PCB itself no longer supplies power to the fan. So, basically, the fan cannot *BE* replaced without also replacing the power supply for the fan.$17.99 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OXTWZI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Photo is of the actual fan, installed to the device (with a chrome fanguard I already had, the one that comes with the fan is very professional looking... so I couldn't, in good conscience, use that for this).Everything works, again. I now require 2 AC plugs to power it, but on the upside, the fan keeps blowing even when you shut the drives off, cooling them off after use, where the original left them as they were.

Inexpensive for a reason?
The unit is just a hair over 6 months old. Last week I noticed that one of the fans had stopped working and now the drives are being disconnected/unavailable. I assume from heating up. The unit isn't the greatest design for removing the heat. I will prob end up making something to stuff the hornettek internals into. Thought I was saving money and now it might end up being a big headache. But, when it was working, it worked well for streaming all my media with Plex media server on the PC. the copy speeds were ok and never had an issue with playback to any of my devices. I think in other reviews, most of the issues had been with the fans and cooling..

Replacing the fan is dead easy - if you know how
I bought one through another listing for shipment to me here in the UK, and it has a noisy fan but replacing it is actually pretty easy - just push a screwdriver through the grill on the top and give it a sharp tap counter-clockwise and the grill will lift out to reveal the fan held in place by 4 small screws. The replacement fan needs to be a 12V 80mm x 80mm x 10mm one with a 2-pin molex connector, like this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004ZS7VPA/ref=pe_3187911_185740111_TE_itemEdited: forgot mention 2 things:- if you get the fan I linked to above, you will have to cut the connector off the old fan and connect it in place of the connector on the new one, as the two are not quite the same type. Also, be careful to leave enough - but not too much - cable to allow it to be "dressed" down into the recess around the fan or else you will not be able to refit the top grill.- the screws securing the old fan are too short for the new one, but the latter comes with 4x new and longer screws which work fine.

Great when it works
I bought one of these because of the JBOD setup and esata/usb3 connectivity. It is light and compact, with a big fan. Just what I wanted. I put a 4tb seagate drive in it - only formatted at 2tb (lazy) and it worked for a couple of days non-stop, streaming content via a media player. Very cool. Then it stopped. Dunno why. Returned it and received a replacement quickly. Since there were only a few, I even ordered a second one.I don't know if it is a power issue or what, but when I plugged in a second drive this time around - both on the replacement and the new machine, both stopped working. Imagine if I put 4 HDDs in!I hope that this is something that can be fixed without returning the devices, because they are just what I'm looking for (CUSTOMER SUPPORT - PLEASE CONTACT ME TO SEE IF WE CAN FIX THIS). Great, when it works.
