Collecting Western Toy Guns

A excellent reference book dealing mainly with cap guns and holsters from the '50s and '60s. This is over 450 pages of great information not fully covered in other cap gun books. You would be hard pressed to not find a B&W photo and info about every cap gun you have. About 24 pages in the middle of the book are in full color. If you could only have one book on this subject, this would be it. As far as the price guides shown, you have to consider this, and the other books available, were written before eBay became popular. Hence, I feel the prices are a bit high for eBay, but probably right on for antique shops, high end auctions, and especially on-line vintage toy dealers. Price guides do give a idea that gun A is worth more or less than gun B. If you really want a "price guide", run a "advanced search" on eBay for items that were actually SOLD over the past few months.

Never mind that it's 20 years old - it's the best antique cap gun book I have seen. (After all it's all about stuff more than 20 years old.) It's extremely well organized with loads of valuable information for collectors. Easy to find the cap guns you own or want to buy. Nicely written foreword with cap gun history and little known facts about the companies that made them. Great photos of cap guns, holsters, spurs, cuffs, ads, etc. Mostly B & W photos but there are some nice full color photos too. Great fun!

Covers a lot of cap guns but not very well written if you are looking for certain item. This is not good for beginners. You have to be knowledgeable before you start.

Schleyer's book is the gold standard in identifying and pricing western toy cap guns and rifles. Spectacular photos and descriptions for the cap gun collector. The best way i've found to catalog my collection and get a sense of rarity and value.
