The best makeover book ever (apart from Sue Donnelly!)
I am a bit of an expert on this specialist subject of mine, having looked for a good makeover book for years and having had nearly all of them at some time! I also teach Textiles and am interested in identity and clothing in theoretical studies, so its a bit of an professional thing too. But even as a professional, you can get it wrong, especially in an area dominated by the youthful and beautiful! This updated version of the old Colour Me Beautiful system (four seasons) is a much more reliable and modern approach it seems to me. Under the old system, Deep Autumn ladies such as me were urged to wear dark brown shoes (so dull!) and avoid black. The new approach, based on your colour depth, brightness or softness, etc takes much more account of personal preferences and a modern, edgier look. I do think it might be still difficult for some people to judge their group just from the book though, and I would certainly back this up with a consultation by a CMB consultant if in any doubt at all (one of the best outlays of money you will ever make, and only about the cost of a good colour and cut). I take the point some ladies make about being told black is not in your catergory, then being told how to wear it - this does initially seem contradictary. Looking closer though, it is not; some groups just require it not being worn so close to the face, or with bright jewellery in their own range to lift the whole effect. Most of these tricks and most of this information is based on good scientific fact; the Munsell colour system is used throughout the fabric dyeing, clothing manufacture and hairdressing industries.Anyone who has ever studied Art and Design will also be very familiar with many of the concepts; this book uses those same "rules" essential to good design. If you get into all this and want to take it further, I would suggest the next books to look are Sue Donnelly's (all excellant) and the intriguing Fashion Feng Shui by Evana Maggiore. Sue Donnelly is a FFS practitioner as well as a CMB Master consultant. Both FFS and SD have fascinating websites,(you can only buy the FFS book via the website) and you can also hear an hour long taped interview about FFS. It was a bit of a pain ordering from the US, but it came quickly and was personally signed. If Amazon uk sold it, I would review it too, but to date, they don't.Life is a complicated enough affair nowadays, without worrying about what to wear, so anything that simplifies the process is good news as far as I'm concerned! The great thing is, once you "get" the basics, you can relax and have fun with your clothing again. An an older woman, I admit to having lost it at times, but these have steered me back on track and I've met some fascinating people along the way.

Useful, easy to use and enjoyable!
I bought this on a whim after seeing the masses of black in my wardrobe! I was very pleasantly surprised as I normally find these types of books basic and repetative. You choose your "colour" based on hair, skin and eye colour and then you are shown colour charts on what colours suit you. Some are quite surpirsing but absolutely correct! The best thing is they are easy to remember and once you have learnt a few basic colours you learn to recognise other colours that suit you (and perhapes more importantly what doesn't!).The only reason I haven't given it five stars is due to the section on clothes shapes. The drawings are unclear and you can't always tell what the difference in shape between items is.I've recommended this book to friends and my wardrobe is now full of colour with just a couple of pairs of black trousers!

really can make you look better
I already knew of this book and realised that wearing the right colour can make you look so much better, same as the wrong colour can make you look drained. To buy a sample set of your best colours on their website is £35-40. So buy 2 copies of the book secondhand (at 0,01p), one to keep and read. Use the other one to cut out your chosen colours and carry them with you when shopping! It's a nice quality book, in my opinion the best one for the job even though not the latest version of it. I showed it to my friend and she bought it too and we shared a book for cutting up.
