A true classic that has been lost to time.
Fell in love with this record back in my college radio days. Probably One of Donny's most commercial, accessable records, but it was quite the artistic achievement when it was released. It begins with a classical motif that has elements of Gershwin, but simply soars to the next level with the soulful and spiritual "Some Day We'll All Be Free". Never one to shy away from good material, Hathaway covers Danny O'Keefe's "Magdalena" and Al Kooper's " I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" , which appeared on the first Blood, Sweat & Tears album. In between there's elements of jazz, fusion, latin, and soul music that is reminiscent of what Stevie Wonder was putting out around the same time. Donny would go on to work with Roberta Flack and would probably be held in much more esteem today had he lived longer. Many of todays Gen X or milennials are unfamiliar with Donny Hathaway's work, which is truly tragic. He should never be forgotten to time.

A good album that tries a bit too hard
Donny HathawayExtension Of A Man(1973 Atlantic - Atlantic/Rhino CD 1993)I was certainly tempted to give this CD Five Stars, just to encourage the reader to buy it (as I think any music collection would be greatly enriched by having every album Donny Hathaway ever made). However, as beautiful as much of the album is, its obviously great intentions fail slightly in creating a cohesive whole. Nevertheless, the attempt at greatness more than deserves to be heard. This CD also includes a very fine bonus cut: "Lord Help Me" which is an excellent performance in its own right.I encourage you to read the customer review by "Peace Brotha" (another Four Star review found on this page) that goes into greater and better detail than this short review.

Donnie Hathaway - Extensions of a Man - Absolutely Warming to the Soul
I put the CD in my car on the way to work about 5:30am and it opened with I Love the Lord, He Heard My Cry...I was blown away...really was not expecting the instrumental, but something was so soothing and strong simultaneously! Then I was hit over the head with Someday We'll all be Free! Oh my GOODNESS...I had heard this song in pieces...but listened very intently to Donnie bellow out tune after tune, satisfying note after satisfying note. By the time I got to track 5 - I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know...I was in tears; overcome with emotion. I have an uncle who suffers with depression and psychiatric issues...and I could hear Donnie's pain in each and every note. The instrumentals are so good and just reminds me of why I LOVE music so much! These young people are not singing or even producing nothing near as genius as Donnie's body of work. They need to listen, they need to learn, they need to liberate themselves from the status quo and get back to real music...this is absolutely warming to the soul!!!

Hautement recommandable !

Donny Hathawayの生前最後の作品となってしまった"Extension Of A Man"。 I Love The Lord; He Heard My Cry, Pts. 1 & 2"は45人という編成で録音されたオーケストラナンバー。 Someday We'll All Be Free"のイントロに展開する。 Extension Of A Man"というタイトルも頷けてしまう。 Valdez in the Country"のようなJazzyなインストナンバーに、3拍子構成の爽快なナンバー"Flying Easy"。"The Ghetto"を想像させるような"The Slums"、誰もが恋してしまいそうなキュートなラヴポップス"Love, Love, Love"に、Leon Wareの切ないメロディが効いた"I Know It's You"。 Someday We'll All Be Free"という曲が、とても悲しく聴こえてしまう時がある。

A bit boring for me I'm afraid
I don't think I am too crusty for this and after Trevor's comments about someone I had never heard of, I was excited about this but it has failed to ignite me at all. Ok -ish. Sorry.
