I find it stings when using. Is it because of the silver, like silver nitrate used in cauterizing?

I don't find that it stings me but I now use them over Adaptic guaze because Silver calcium alginate wound dressing pads on the bare wound would pull off the skin from the sides of the wound.

Does it have oil in it?

I don't believe so. It's a seaweed based material with silver in it. It's not oily to the touch. I'm not sure if you're worried about texture or allergies. There shouldn't be a problem with either.
