Q: Are the keyboard and trackpad detachable? It looks as though they sit in a tray together, but that maybe they can be taken out and used separately?

Yes they can be separated to use out of the stand. They are just a tight, push fit. The stand itself cannot be split into two. It keeps everything neat & tidy with them being together. I also have a Logitech MX Master mouse and tend to use that alongside the trackpad.

Q: Does it work with apple trackpad 3?

That’s a good question! I’ve had the original trackpad, and replaced it with the Apple Magic Trackpad 2 (wireless & rechargeable) If the Trackpad 3 has the same profile/footprint then it could slot in. But the product described is “stand for Magic Trackpad 2 & Apples latest Magic keyboard “. Having said that I’ve viewed the Apple site, and the Magic Trackpad shown in Black is identical profile to the Trackpad 2

Q: Am I right to assume that a left hander like me could just put the keyboard & trackpad in the other way around & it would still look tidy?

In short No! The stand has a gentle slope upwards to the back of the stand, it has a flat base to keep it stable, it has mouldings for the corners to “clip into” allowing the trackpad to sit on the right and keyboard to the left. I have both the magic keyboard and trackpad and of course they have a lightning slot in the rear to be recharged so easily. There may be a “left hand model” but not something I would search for. I really don't know sorry. O have my track pad in mine . I don't know which track pad is which. I have just looked at the box and my one is a track pad 2. I hope this helps.
