Peloton

I absolutely love this album. I can't stop listening to it. I had to save up to buy it mostly because it isn't on iTunes but I also wanted at least one of their CDs. They are my favorite band. They are so unheard of it is depressing. Although I do enjoy being the only student at my high school who listens to them. Their lyrics and melodies are flawless. I really do recommend this. It is a masterpiece. When I ordered it, it gave me a ridiculous shipping period but I got it in 2 weeks. This was great since I live in the Western part of the U.S and it was being shipped from Europe. I've has it for a month or so and I still play it everyday.

When they're not promoting Bis, Mogwai, or Arab Strap, the heads of Britain's Chemikal Underground Records (Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward) like to make music for themselves. "Peloton" is a low-profile wonder -- it doesn't bowl you over on first listen, but gradually builds until you realize you've just listened to the CD seven straight times. The sound is essentially folk elements brought into the standard two-guitars/bass/drums rock format. But the melodies, musical ideas, and lyricism -- as well as small touches of let's-try-anything -- makes for magical listening. (Think Richard and Linda Thompson, or REM in their "Fables of the Reconstruction" era.) I'd give it an extra half-star if only the review form would let me. I've got an import version that includes an 11th song, titled "The Weaker Argument Defeats the Stronger," which I hope is indeed included on the American version.

グラスゴー出身の四人組ロック・バンド、ザ・デルガドス。このアルバムでは、バンド・サウンドに、のちの『ヘイト』ほどのオーケストレーションはありませんが、ストリングス、フルート、クラリネット、ピアノ、パーカッションが加わります。デルガドスは、ビートルズ、ストーンズ、ザ・フー、ジャムといったところのビート感あふれるブリティッシュ・ロック・バンドとはちがいますね。それらが「陽」とすると、どちらかと言うと『OKコンピューター』以降のレディオヘッド（UKギター・ロック）やウィルコ『ヤンキー・ホテル・フォックストロット』（アメリカ・シカゴの音響系）などと共通する「陰」です。心地よく温和だけど、少し陰、歪みのあるギター・サウンド。ヒーリング／調和半分、メランコリック／停滞半分の効果をリスナーにもたらす、と言うか。トラック６、９あたりでは、それまでの静謐なリズム・セクション、バンド・サウンドとは打って変わって、音響、サイケデリックを使って、激しく乱れてみせます。ともすれば、苦悩を湛え、陰鬱に聴こえがちな音世界を、エマ・ポラック、アラン・ウッドワードの、ともにやさしい印象を与える男女混声ヴォーカルが和らげています。躁と鬱とが繰り返されたあと、最終トラックで大団円を迎え、リスナーに一枚のアルバムを聴き終えた達成感をもたらすという意味で、デルガドスはレディオヘッド、ウィルコと同じで、キャッチーなフレーズを切り売りしないしっかりとしたバンドですね。このあとにリリースされたアルバムでもデルガドスは確実に進歩を遂げています。このことを考慮して、四つ星にとどめておきます。デルガドスの場合、歌詞もすばらしいようなのですが、リーフレットに歌詞が印刷されていないのが残念です。
