HCS 14" Crash

the 14” crash sounds good and is good quality. looks really good on my kit

A lot of the reviews for this are divided. "Oh, it sounds great," and "sounds like a s***ty gong" come to mind. I bought it anyways. It is definitely a cheap buy, and still looks like an amazing cymbal. As for sound, it does sound pretty crappy. But it's still a great buy for beginner drummers, or drummer who just like to jam out in their basements/garage. Once you start to get a gig or two, you should consider going with a better cymbal UPDATE: I've had the cymbal for about 1.5 years, and it's cracked to the point where I can't play it anymore. It's MOST likely because of the way I've been hitting it, and NOT because of crappy manufacturing. As I look at my old review I think I was a bit critical. I've grown to love the bright sound of this cymbal, and will probably buy another one

I am a 'mature adult' beginner on the drums. I recently bought a drumset that had 1 cymbal to act as both a ride & crash (in addition to a hi-hat) so I decided to get the Meinl crash cymbal. So far I would say it's pretty good; I set it up on a Pacific PDP700 cymbal stand which does the job but has felt pieces that I probably will replace because they're too thick. The cymbal sounds very good and is a good deal for the price.

Most entry-level crash cymbals that I've used tend to have a shrill metallic decay, but so far my experience with Meinl's HCS line has been exceptional! I personally own this 14" HCS crash cymbal and the HCS bell (which is far superior to any other sub-$100 bell that I've played.... but this review is for the 14" crash cymbal). This cymbal provides the expected decay from one of its size, but does not have any unpleasant, ear-piercing overtones as I feel most entry-level cymbals made of brass provide. I won't mention any other name brands for comparison, but this HCS cymbal far exceeds my expectations than the P-brands and off branded brass alloy cymbals I have played in the past. This is an excellent crash cymbal for a student drummer or on an experienced drummer's practice kit.

When it comes to buying cymbals, you truly do get what you pay for. That being said, I cannot find any fault in this entry level fast crash. I have it set as my splash crash in between a set of Sabian AAX 14 inch and 16 inch crashes. By itself, the sound is not very impressive, but when played along with a sonically similar cymbal, it sounds great! I am going to add a few more of this series at different sizes just to see what sonic combinations I can come up with! A great buy for the price!

First impression: This cymbal looks nice; a very bright finish, looks well made. Upon playing, something feels a bit different from the cymbal I replaced, which was a Zildjian ZBT. I feel like it is fair to compare these two cymbals, because HCS is Meinl's entry level cymbal and ZBT is Zildjian's entry level. They have a similar sound, but the HCS seems thicker and heavier. This may turn out to be a good thing, but right off the bat it is a little off putting. It just kind of threw me off. Overall, I'm happy so far. I'll update this review once I've played on it a bit more. UPDATE: After playing on this for just one week, I had to change my review from "like it," to "love it." The cymbal sounds great, and the uncertainties I had about it quickly faded away as I played it. Great cymbal, especially for the price!
