Lovely adventure
This was one of my favorite books as a kid, I have been buying copies now to give to the kids I know. The story is a little like an expanded fairytale (young hero goes out to seek his fortune, levels up, makes friends, saves the day many times). I've always really loved Dominic because he was a straightforward every-man (or every-dog) but also very noble in that he helped others and was fearless. Steig based Dominic on his own father, which I've always found rather sweet. The pictures are also really fun and there are lots of them. It's a nice stepping stone for a kid who enjoyed Steig's more well known picture books but is now ready for chapter books.

A classic story that can help growing kids and maybe some adults too!
This story is classic Steig. His writing is nothing less than beautiful, interesting, and exciting. The book illustrates the trials of a youth's life and how he chooses to navigate a fruitful path although often laborious and even dangerous instead of an easy path without much excitement so that he can find himself. My son was a little young for this book when I bought it, so I had to read it to him, but he loved the story and has wanted to hear it many times. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good book, even if it is for young kids. Difficult-to-understand parts and vocabulary can easily be explained along with Steig's drawings.

Dominic and his dealings with the DOOMSDAY GANG!
Meet Dominic, a dog, who sets off on an adventure with his bandanna packed with food and a piccolo. The first creature he meets is a witch alligator who offers to tell him his fortune but Dominic, being shrewd does not part with any money. He does however, take her advice on which road to follow. Not much farther on he meets a catfish who advises him of his need for a spear. Will Dominic really need the spear? You bet! It is not much later that he meets three members of the dreaded Doomsday Gang! Will he win the battle?Dominic is the sort of dog you would like to meet in human form. He is very considerate of others and even saves a yellow jacket from a spider's web. When he comes to the home of Bartholomew Badger, who is 100 years old, he stays and cares for him until his death. After burying him, he then searches for the treasure that Bartholomew has left him. A great lesson here as Dominic soon realizes how much of a burden wealth can be. How does he handle it?SO many great characters in this book. Kids will smile at Matilda Fox and her five goslings! Yes, that's not a typo. The goose has the surname of Fox! So many more that you will meet as you journey with Dominic. With pictures spread sporadically throughout this book that add to the storytelling this is a chapter book that is FANTASTIC as a read aloud over several days or great for older, independent readers. The writing is not at all dumbed down so don't be surprised if you get asked what a word means. You may even have to look some up yourself! For parents who are concerned about the influence of alcohol, alcohol is consumed but not on a regular basis and where it occurs flows naturally with the story and setting.

Good for 8 year-olds and up
I liked this book a lot as an 8-year-old, and read through it quickly. And it was also a hit with my 7-year-old when I read it to him.Steig's language is advanced for children, which is both a plus and a minus. The plus is that your child will see or hear words that are good to know, the minus is that it can make reading a little more difficult. The story keeps moving and the characters are likable and expressive and motivated by virtues.Steig typically tackles life-and-death subject matter, and this book is no different. In fact, one character dies during the book in a drawn out section. It is not heavy-handed, but it is good to be aware that these subjects are discussed at length.

Dominic Will Inspire You!!
Love, love, love this book but it’s a novel for children with a few illustrations. As a teacher, I read it aloud to my 2nd graders every year and they loved it! Dominic is an optimistic hero who rights wrongs and helps those weaker than himself. The vocabulary in the book is high level and will challenge children. It’s a wonderful adventure!!

A childhood delight enjoyed again
I read this book 20 or more years ago and had forgotten about it until yesterday, when I began assembling books for a tutoring job. I sought out delightful, imaginative books, and this one came to mind. I didn't remember the title but did remember the illustrations. Fortunately some folks on goodread had listed the title - without that resource, I may never have found it. Anyhoo, it was a quick read, and just as delightful as I remembered... although I understood the character somewhat differently than I imagine I had as a child. The language was thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended! I'll be reading it to my daughter after we finish The Chronicles of Narnia.

Astounding
Throughout my life, I'd always remembered the "first book I ever read" as about some dog who played the piccolo and traveled around with his possessions in a sack on a stick. I remembered it so fondly, like one of those few, golden memories you hold onto from childhood, when you still believed in the tooth faerie and unicorns.I never remembered the title, though, and the book had long since disappeared from my parent's house. One day I did an extensive Google search with only the words "dog," "piccolo" and "traveler" and managed to stumble across William Steig's website.I just bought myself a new copy of "the first book I ever read" and can't wait to read it again. It really is a book that has stayed with me my entire life. I just found it astonishing that so many other people wrote the exact same thing in their reviews. How can it be that one book has been the "first book" for so many people? I don't know, but I do know that if you can let it be your kid's first book, they will cherish it forever. I sure did.

Dominic is a gentle but confident hero
Dominic is a wonderful chapter book for mid elementary school readers, and includes fun and wisdom for all ages. Great read aloud story. William Steig is one of the great authors. Dominic is gentle but has piercing confidence. Steig’s characters always strike a real chord emotionally. I personally never forget a William Steig book.

Dominic è umile, intelligente, coraggioso e in ricerca. Quale miglior compagno di viaggio per bambini e adulti non disposti a credere alle paure e alla sfortuna?
