Deep

It seems that the Stick Men just get better with age. Deep is a progressive rock album featuring the tasty Chapman Stick bass lines of Tony Levin, the "in your face" lead touch guitar work of Markus Reuter, and the complex rhythms of Pat Mastelotto. Right from the opening track of the funky "Nude Ascending Staircase" the Stick Men present a solid framework that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The track "Crack in the Sky" features the breathy vocals of Levin and haunting melodic lines of Reuter all wrapped into a very ethereal, memorable experience. The final track "Whale Watch" takes you on a musical journey going out to sea to get a first hand look at the magnificent whale. The musical theme of the track is one that you will find yourself wanting to go back and listen to over and over again.You will notice that I did not mention Pat Mastelotto in my review of the tracks, that is simply because he shines on every track giving a backbone to all of the music.The Special Edition features a DVD which is basically a live road diary. The tales of the origins of the album tracks as well as a few humorous stories of life on tour give the viewer a peek behind the curtain of the band. There are a few live performance segments which will give you a good idea of how they sound live.Overall the Stick Men never fail to entertain if you are a fan of progressive rock... or even if you are not.

I have to concur with the, so far unanimous ratings of 5 of 5. Holy crud. This album is wonderful. Stellar performances. Superb sound and mix.I've only heard the 5.1. I'm sure the stereo does the trick - it's just not my thing except for in the car, which isn't true stereo (most cars have rears that double the stereo signals).If you have any interest in the players, then GET THIS.

As much as I love Tony Levin just didn't think this was up to his usual greatness.

I totally agree with Frog Boy and M. L. Williams about the content of this CD, just adding that if you liked King Crimson's Projekcts box set, you'll love Deep.My only complaint is that the CD "wallet" has got to be one of the cheesiest and cheapest excuses for packaging that has become all too prevalent these days. Presentation matters!

Fascinating combination of complex rhythms and musicianship. I loved every minute of this CD. This unusual and highly creative group has jumped to the top of my listening list. I don't know why I haven't been privy to this music before this, but I am sure glad WHYY featured their show at the Sellersville Theater. Now I am hooked!

This is a remarkable outing by Stick Men. As I write this I am preparing to see them in concert for the sixth time. They are again receiving rave reviews on this tour: listen to this release and it is easy to see why!Every song here is a gem. These are three world class musicians with phenomenal technical prowess all in the service of the music. Yes, you will find all the elements that attract progressive rock fans: extreme chops, odd time signatures, multiple themes and complex compositional elements. But in the end, there are great SONGS here with hummable melodies and danceable rhythms (although some folks have trouble stepping out in 7 time!).Tony, Pat, and Markus have crafted another fine release here and I look forward to many more. Treat yourself and don't pass this one by!

CD + DVD im Digipack mit DTS 96/24 und Resolution Audio 24 bit 96kHz 5.1Musikalisch für mich schwer einzuordnen. Was ist das für Musik? Kopf hinter dem Projekt ist Tony Levin, u.A. bekannt von Peter Gabriel. Irgendwie liegt das Ganze im Dunstfeld von King Crimson bis Steve Wilson. Einige Passagen könnten auch auf einem Wilson Album Platz finden. Mal sphärisch, mal ein Hauch Jazz und ab und zu wird gerock oder eine Metal artige Noise Attacke, "Frickel-Rock". Bis auf Track 5 Crack In The Sky nur instrumental. Durchaus abwechslungsreich, ohne aber Stücke zu bieten, die im Kopf bleiben. Eine Kritik die ich gelesen habe sagt "good but not great". Etwas schwammig diese Aussage, aber ich wüsste es auch nicht anders zu definieren. Auf jeden Fall keine leichte Kost.Gehört habe ich die Resolution Audio Spur. Wer auf agressiven Rundumklang steht, der hat hier ein sehr gutes Beispiel. Klarer, in den Höhen dennoch angenehmer Sound, bei dem die Rears sehr vielfältig und heftig eingesetzt werden. Der Sub wird gut genutzt, habe aber schon deutlich tiefreichendere Mucke gehört.

Nicht nur für Fans von King Crimson und Progrock, sondern auch etwas für Metal-Jüngerinnen und -Jünger, auch Jazz-Fans können der Scheibe etwas abgewinnen. Nicht immer ganz einfache Kost, aber spannend - im wahrsten Sinn des Wortes - zum Zuhören. Zum Schluss wirklich ganz "Großes Kino" mit dem zehnminütigen "Whale Watch".

１曲目のNude ascending staircasse（階段を昇っていく裸体？）のトニー・レビンのスティックワークからぞくぞくします。重低音のパット・マステロットのドラムとトニーのスティック、そしてロバート・フリップのギタークラフト出身のドイツ人マーカス・ルーターの３人組の演奏は、たぶんヌーボメタルとフリップが称していた９０年以降のクリムゾン遺伝子を現在一番受け継いでいるバンドと言えるかもしれません。以下、実際にこのスペシャル・エディションを購入した上でのレビューを書きます。　このレビューをご覧になった方は、もちろんキングクリムゾンはご存じだと思います。改めて申し上げますと、このスティック・メンのうち2名は元キングクリムゾンのメンバー。とくにトニー・レビンは８０年代のクリムゾンから関わっている中心人物の一人です。一番若いドイツ人のマーカス・ルーターは、２０歳台の頃（１９９１−１９９８）にロバート・フリップのギタークラフトに参加しており、御大から直接指導を受けています。そういう意味では、純血バンドとも言えるでしょう。　さて、このスペシャル・エディションはCDとDVDの2枚組で、CDは全９曲。ヌーボメタル・クリムゾンぽい曲ばかりではありませんが、その手の曲が好きな方は、大いに楽しめます。ある部分はトニー・レビンの過去のアルバム（たとえば「 Pieces of the Sun 」を思い起こさせるような、豊かなイメージが広がるメロディーの曲もあります。またマーカスが演奏するフリップのサウンドスケープのような部分もあります。もちろんフリップ（やエイドリアン・ブリュー）がいないため、やはりキングクリムゾンそのものではありません。１枚通して聞くと、やや単調に感じるかもしれません。しかし新しい「クリムゾン的なもの」を求めるなら、この三人を聞くしかないのではと思っております。　次にDVDについてですが、これがお勧めです。構成は、以下の通りです。（１）5.1 MIXES（２）HI-RES Stereo（３）"A little Deeper"　Concert Film（４）Bonus Truck(1)と(2)について、曲はCDと同じです。私自身は再生装置を持っておらず、これらの違いを説明できる能力がありません。　コンサートフィルムは、演奏の合間に２０１２年のツアー風景が挿入されていて、また全体的に三人のコメントも入っていて、とても興味深いです。映像を見れば、トニーとマーカスの役割分担がはっきりわかります。CDには入っていない「Big Dog」「Firebirds Suite Part1-4」という曲も演奏されています。ツアーの移動中の風景などはメンバーが撮影していて、生っぽい雰囲気が楽しいです。一瞬、若かりしフリップの写真が出てくる「おふざけ」もあったりして・・・。　ボーナストラックは、Crack in the sky　のイタリア語版とスペイン語版が5.1サラウンド版とステレオ版の2種ずつ入っています。　それにしてもトニー・レビンは６７歳（パットは５８歳、マーカスは４１歳）ですが、まだまだロックを演奏してくれていて、嬉しい限りです。魂が若いです。つい先日（２０１３年３月１６日）、同窓会バンドのクリムゾン・プロジェクトを川崎クラブチッタで観ましたが、その時もかっこよかったなあ。　とても長くなりましたが、どうかクリムゾンが好きな方、あるいは好きだった方、最後の最後まで、クリムゾンの元メンバーを追い続けるのはいかがでしょうか。私も歳をとった（もうすぐ５８歳です）けど、ロック音楽は聴き続けたい思いでいっぱいです。元気に、がんばりましょう！ Pieces of the Sun

Stick Menのアルバムとしては、「Soup（2010）」「Open（2012）」に続くオリジナルアルバムとしては3枚目ということになる。「Open（2012）」がインプロ演奏のアルバムという特殊な形ではああったけれども中々いいアルバムで、その良さがこの「Deep」にも成果としてでていると思う。KCファンにとってはKCファンメンバーによるアルバムは、どうしても「KC耳」と「KC脳」が邪魔してしまい、それぞれの作品の良さを冷静に判断することが出来ないという悲しい性がある（私もそうです・・・）のだが、このアルバムは非常にクオリティーの高いアルバムではにだろうか。如何せん、シーケンシャルフレーズとかレヴィンのスティックの音色、マステロット独特のグルーブ感の無い（笑・失礼）バタバタと叩く変拍子のドラムを聞いてしまうと、どうしても「KC耳」と「KC脳」が邪魔をして「KCの作品」として聞いてしまうのだが、「Deep」ではどの曲もわりとゆったりと構えて、メンバーそれぞれがじっくり演奏していることと、どの曲も明確なメロディーラインを排しているので（ここが「Soup」との大きな違い）、KC的ではあるがかなりいい方向にアルバム作りが成功している。それからミックス作業などをマステロットに任せなかったところも、ある意味KC臭からのそれなりの脱却に成功しているのだと思う。そうとはいっても、KCの「ヌーヴォ・メタル」スタイルはやはり継承しているので、KCファンにとってこれをどう評価するかというところはやや難しい作業かもしれない。KCリズム隊として活躍した二人のメンバーが中心ではあるが、Michael Bernierに代わり加入した Markus Reuterのタッチギターと電子音のプログラム関係も自然で迫力もあり、Stick Menのグレードアップに貢献していると思われる。なお、この「Deep-Special Edition」は2枚組であり、通常CDの他にDVD仕様の24bitハイレス・ステレオ音源と5.1CHミックス音源、そしてきちんと編集された（単独販売であってもおかしくないクオリティーの）ライブの模様が収録されている。★ライブ映像のリスト「A LITTLE DEEPER(64分35秒)」★：1.INTRO 2.BEFORE THE SHOW 3.A BIT DEEPER 4.CUSP 5.THE DEEP SESSIONS 6.SEPIA 7.SOMEWHAT DEEPER 8.OPEN PART3-TRUNCHEON 9.EVEN DEEPER 10.SOUP 11.A LITTLE TOO DEEP? 12.FIREBIRD SUIT,PARTS 1-4 13.AS DEEP AS IT GETS 以上。その他にDVDにはボーナストラックとして音源が収録されているが、「CRACK IN THE SKY」が4種類、そのうち2種は5.1CH仕様。このようにDVDが以外にもてんこ盛りで、非常に充実しているので、通常版よりはこちらを買ったほうが絶対にお得です！
