How does the handle/pole go together? I am looking to make it small for my 4 year old or 2 year old

The handle and pole screw together and comes in four pieces -- three pieces of threaded pipe and a plastic top to screw on top of the top of the handle.  Make sure the kids are mature enough to use these properly, I had one years ago that my then three year old sister (much younger than me) threw through a window.  It works great for breaking windows and should serve you for sweeping the floor and carpet for a couple of years.

What is the point of the handle grip? It falls right off. It is so big and there should be grooves inside to help affix it to handle.

Positiveity! It is the best carpet sweeper I have ever had. I use it everyday. We do not wear outdoor shoes in our house so I use it constantly. It is the best. I pick up even a small little piece of lint and we also have a cat so I use it all day long. I also use on our front porch rug that gets all kinds of stuff on it even small pea gravel. I am a very clean person and I can not stand anything on my floors. I even use it on the kitchen floor. You will not be sorry. My first one lasted about 10 years. It also picks up cat liter in the house off of a thick rug. I could not be without it.

Does it works well on laminated floors and tile

I think this works much better on carpet.  It cleans my area rugs far better than it cleans my laminate and wood floors.  It does pick up a fair amount, but not along edges or in corners.  I also get the pushing dirt effect another user mentioned.
