Yakari and Great Eagle (Yakari)

The team of Job and Derib published their first Yakari comic book story in 1973. They have gone on to publish thirty three additional volumes and produced an animated television series. Their series has also been translated into seventeen languages. Yakari has finally become available in English due to the efforts of the British publishing company, "9th Cinebook". As of this review, they have published six Yakari volumes and hopefully they will be able to roll out additional volumes.The Yakari series revolves around the adventures of a small Sioux boy who has the ability to speak with animals. In turn, the stories unfold around his encounters with North American animals. "Yakari and the Great Eagle" is the first book in the series and introduces the key characters, Rainbow his best friend, Great Eagle his totem and Little Thunder his pony.The Yakari series is geared towards young children. It is successful because of the high quality illustrations that are so characteristic of the Franco-Belgian school of comic book design. The only downside is that the protrayal of Native American culture seems dated by today's standards. Hopefully, later volumes will come more into line with current values. Overall, this is a beautiful series of books and both parents and children will enjoy reading them. Recommended.

Hi,I have purchased the complete collection for my daughter in the original version, French. She loved it and she knows now most of north american animals. Plus it is very positive for kids.I buy this book now for my nephews in the US for spreading the good spirit of this series of comic books. I strongly recommend Yakari to parents and read the story to their kids. Videos are available too.

This whole series is good. Each graphic novel has a message of doing the right thing without being to obvious about it. My kids loves comic books and both if them really liked this whole series.

"Yakari, v.1: Yakari And Great Eagle"by Job & Derib(Cinebooks, 1973/2005)---------------------------------------------------Here's the beginning of a delightful European graphic novel series that stars a kind-hearted, earnest young Sioux boy named Yakari, who receives a visit and a vision from his protector totem, the Great Eagle of the book's title. Great Eagle reveals to Yakari that he has the gift of being able to speak with animals, and while the adults in his tribe don't know about this gift, soon one of his friends, a girl named Rainbow, realizes that Yakari has a special relationship to nature.One might imagine that a French series about Native Americans would be rife with the sort of blithe ethnic stereotypes than made "Asterix & Obelix" a delight, but thankfully this is not the case -- Swiss-born cartoonist Claude de Ribaupierre (aka "Derib") is also the author of the more realistic action series "Buddy Longaway," which also explores the American West, and seems to have an empathy for the material. In the Yakari books, we never see white men (although there are horses, so this must take place after or during the Spanish conquest...) and tribal life is presented simply and matter-of-factly, without any pernicious stereotypes. (There is one character named Slow Motion, but any presumed idleness or stupidity on his part is never elaborated on, at least not in the English translations... Other names have been altered since an earlier English translation; as far as the plot goes, there's no change -- the books don't dwell on human characters much and basically are not offensive... Of course, I speak as an outsider; someone of Sioux ancestry might view things differently.)All in all, this is a wonderful series for younger readers, full of magical scenarios, natural splendor and earnest moral values. Yakari is always a hard worker and a true friend; he endeavors to improve the world around him, and his honesty and loyalty are repaid by the various animals as well as by the spirit world. Plus, Derib's artwork is a delight: his panoramic landscapes, in particular, evoke a sense of true wonder. Highly recommended! (ReadThatAgain children's book reviews)

This is a wonderful story and my little boy and I enjoy sitting down together to read it. We're looking forward to reading Yakari and the White Buffalo next!!

Yakari is a great comic for kids, with large pictures, well drawn and a simple storyline based on nature and animals.

The Yakari series of books published English by Cinebook is wonderful for children and adults alike. The drawings and method of presentation is simply beautiful and the stories are simple yet have a subtle serious message within them. My daughter loves Yakari and can't wait for the next installment. I feel the same!

This book is brilliant on two counts: The story of a young boy learning about the animals around him and his own abilities is simple but interesting reading to a 6yr old. The pictures (cartoon strip style) are just gorgeous. Buy this in preference to any comic style Ben10 book!

A beautiful and imaginative introduction to the world of a little Sioux Indian. My 6 and 4 year olds are hooked, and my own childhood experience was of re-reading Yakari into my early teens.
