50 Successful Ivy League Application Essays 2nd Edition

This is a book that you could hand over to your son or daughter to read as an example of a good essay. However, it is only useful if you wish to apply to IVY schools or a few Highly Select schools such as University of Chicago or Johns Hopkins. Most of the state public schools do not need this kind of essays. So, if your kids just want to go a good state school, you don' t need to buy this book. I also think, based on recent experience, the importance of an essay is overrated. You really just need decent grades, decent test scores of ACT or SAT, solid teacher recommendations for a definite admission to a good state school.

My daughter asked for this book specifically to help her write something extraordinary for her college app essays. After reading it, she was less enthusiastic. It reiterated much of what high school guidance departments tell kids.

I found this helpful with application essays for not only Ivy League schools but other schools as well. As a perfectionist, I usually get caught up with the fact that my essays might be completely off, but this book gave me a good idea when writing the applications.
