Practical Falconry

A great intro to the sport.
Very well laid out, plain language that assumes you aren't someone who has been exposed to falconry for years. Mr. McKay went into great detail about everything that would be important to the beginner and average falconer, without wasting time trying to tell you how to craft certain components (like hoods), but instead points readers to better sources for that information. While much of the information us universal, I wish there was more detail for American falconers, where the sport is heavily regulated, but you can only ask so much from a British falocner. A must have.

Helping Someone Fulfill a Dream
My grandson-in-law told me that he always has wanted to learn falconry. I bought the books for him. He is delighted. The books have opened a new door for him. They are well written and have wonderful pictures. He loves them! I talk about the books because I also purchased one with wonderful pictures of all the different hawks in the world.Cuban Girl

Too much sudetracking
I’ve read a lot of falconry books and this is the worst I have read to the point I couldn’t get past the 2nd chapter. On describing the hawks, he spends most of the short paragraphs complaining about other falconer’s methods rather then telling of the benefits of each bird at times. The Harris hawk is a great example where he complains about them not being the best in the section about another species (red tail if I recall). I would avoid this book if interested in falconry, there are better options out there that don’t get sidetracked do badly

I've had this book on my wish list but fortunately found it at the library
I've had this book on my wish list but fortunately found it at the library. I'm glad I didn't buy it. It has decent entry-level information...maybe good for adolescent readers. The author frequently refers to other books for more info...why wouldn't I just get those books instead? He also makes hoity toity comments about how he has seen other falconers do things wrong and how "stupid" they are...very condescending at times. Not enough photos to show the specialty items. Overall it is a cursory and trite overview of falconry and for this price I wouldn't spend my money on it.

A present for someone else
But he told me it was one of the best books he'd seen on the subject, the pictures were wonderful and he'll use them as reference in his tattoo art.I think it persuaded him to go handling falcons as well as he appears to have fun every weekend with birds (of the feathered variety, natch)
