Wonderful book about the Korean first birthday
I absolutely adore this book! I am half Korean and was born and raised in S.Korea. Both of my children have had a Dol, so it was so great to be able to share with them what it was like and why we do it. I found that the book was 99% accurate (although they spell Dol with a “T” in the book, which is incorrect). My daughter has already read this book 4 times in the few days she’s gotten it. Love love love!!!!!!!!!

Great to look at but not so entertaining
My kids loved the illustrations in this book, as did I, but the storyline itself was way too wordy, dragged out, and not put in a fun way to keep the attention of my little ones. I was even bored after a few pages.

Beautifully Illustrated, Packed with Culture
What Will You Be, Sara Mee? is a fun, entertaining book that highlights an interesting piece of Korean culture. It is Sara Mee's first birthday, her "tol", and her older brother, Chong, is excited for his little sister's "toljabee", a game in which the one year old child picks symbolic items from a table in front of them and the object they pick is an indicator of what they will be when they grow up. The book is full of beautiful and colorful illustrations that depict Sara Mee's birthday party, which is full of Korean clothing, food, and decorations. This book is perfect for multicultural family looking to teach their children about Korean culture (the author herself wrote the book to celebrate her Korean-born adopted daughter's heritage and culture), or in use for a culture unit in an elementary school. The back of the book contains a useful glossary of Korean terms used throughout the book, and I would suggest to any person who might not be familiar with some of the terms to pre-read the book and know how to pronounce the words before reading it aloud to children. Overall, a great tool to teach children, Korean or otherwise, a fun and interesting tradition.

Beautiful Korean Customs
This beautifully illustrated story is a cultural sharing experience.Chong, 6 tells his baby sister Sara Mee that she will celebrate her tol, or first birthday. Ever much the big brother, he stays at his sister's side, helping to bathe her, all the while talking about the Korean tradition of the tol.Family members such as their grandparents from Korea, various aunts, uncles and cousins arrives. Their uncle Kwang plays a special drum, traditional Korean treats are eaten and then...the moment of the unveiling, or the choice Sara Mee will make when presented with many different choices for her future life. What a lovely book that shares Korean traditions and Korean cultures. The characters are just delightful and the illustrations superb. One cousin is clearly Eurasian, an adorable moppet with blond hair and blue eyes and very Korean in appearance. He is a linking of Eastern and Western cultures and is very much a part of Sara Mee's tol, as are all the other family members. This book is such a treat that it will delight all ages. This is ideal for families and classrooms. An added bonus is the glossary at the end of the book that provides definitions of Korean terms, foods and background of the tol.
