Traditional Japanese Stencil Designs

I knew from other reviews that it wasn’t a book of stencils but I was hoping the images of stencils would be at least full page because they are very detailed. I love the images and designs but the pictures are small and the paper of this book seems like it won’t hold up. Concept is good but execution is a bit lacking.

If you are looking for stencils to utilize immediately, this book is not a good choice. Its more like a sourcebook than images in 'Look Inside' appear. There aren't any useable stencils in the book and the intricate detail would require many, many hours of stencil cutting with a regular stencil cutter. I'm going to invest in a Cri-cut type of electric cutter - now that I have this book. As you might have caught on by those words, this book either leads to an investment of time or a cutting machine. Needless to say, my Goodwill purchased armoire is still unpainted.The designs and images in the book are inspirational, though, and quite lovely; but honestly there are sourcebook with Japanese designs that offer more choices and more variety. If the book had been labeled a sourcebook, I wouldn't have bought it and since it was titled as stencils, I was disappointed. Not a best choice for a home painting project, definately not.

While I love the images in this book, the print quality and paper used is poor. My book had streaky print where solid black should be on a number of images. You could easily see through the pages to the image printed on the backside of the paper. I had seen an older version of this book and purchased my own because I liked the images (for use with metal etching). Unfortunately, the book's quality made me return it as defective. If you're going to buy this, try to look for an older, used version.

This book is about as fine as I had hoped. It's not very long, but the prints are very nice. I already made logical use out of it the first week I had it.

i liked the words,there coulda been more captions on the samples but the introduction 'sexamples of figure terminology was illuminating...

Should have read closer. Guess it's good for what it is. I'm not sure what I was expecting but will find some way to use it.

This book is a good reference for Japanese katagami stencils, or paper stencils used for creating designs on textiles. The selection of designs is fantastic, and the introduction adds some nice general information and context. The book is large, around A4 size, but somewhat flimsy - more like a thick magazine than a book, and the print quality is okay. Some of the designs with very fine lines and detail don't look as great as they could. I would have liked something a little higher quality and more robust.I bought this book because I'm interested in ise katagami and wanted a nice collection of stencil designs for reference and inspiration, and it does the job - there are a lot of beautiful and varied designs here so I will definitely get some good use out of it. If you're looking for something similar I would recommend it. However, I have paid less for art books with higher quality paper and print quality, and some more in-depth information on the history and process of creating and using the stencils would be nice to have.

I love most things Japanese and appreciate the Japanese attention to detail and these designs are just what you would expect. There are lots of them, all in black and white. My only reservation is that they are so detailed and there are so many tiny parts that I think you would struggle to cut stencils by hand at the size they are in the book. I was taught to cut stencils with a hot cutter - a bit like a soldering iron. I think you would have to increase the stencils in size to use that tool. If you wanted to cut them to the same size it would have to be done with a very sharp scalpel. I think I will probably lift parts from the designs I like - there is plenty of choice - and enlarge those for use. I am glad I bought it but I'm glad I didn't pay much for it.
