Good read
Not the most amazing book you’ll find out there that teaches you how to web scrape. I was expecting too much when I purchased this book, and I am disappointed by it. There are several reasons why this book is not the ‘best’ material for a beginner. First, the book was based on a lot of code samples. It was hard for a beginner to understand all these regular expressions, import packages, and different html/css formats just by staring at the code. It was frustrating whenever I saw a page-long section of code being slapped right onto my face with very superficial explanation on implementation details. Then, there is a problem with the topics the book covered. A lot of the things the book mentioned can be found online, and they do a better job at explaining the material than the author does.

Matches my style/need
This book fit my situation well. I'm pretty comfortable with python but had not done any webscraping, and have a specific research project on my plate right now that requires deeper-than-google web research. The author wastes very little time trying to teach the reader python, but does provide small, mostly-clean code examples to show the proper syntax and python structures that are the best suited for the scraping and database modules that the book is based on.The read is quick, because the author structured the book so only the first half of the books is "required reading." The second half is more of a reference section, that you can selectively read if the topic applies to your project. I find myself referring to a couple of these later chapters for my project, but not all.Other than a familiarity with python, the author assumes no prior technical knowledge on the subjects covered. Some folks might find this too basic, but was fine for me, because I had little knowledge of how the internet works, beyond a superficial level.

Very Helpful
It’s a useful book if you have a basic understanding of Python and website construction. I use it mostly as a reference out of the index, but it stays on the top of my pile.

Not a beginner level book, but very insightful.
Really insightful book for those who would like to explore coding with Python. Not exactly a beginner level book though I needed to research quite a bit to understand the concepts.

Sticker placed on front cover
The book seems fine. But the company selling it placed a sticker on the front cover. I ordered the book new. I am still trying to get the sticker patch off my front cover. I can't store it on a book shelf because it is too sticky.

Compared to first edition?
I got a reasonable introduction to web-scraping from the first edition of this book so was curious to see if the second edition would be any different. To be honest, it looks very much the same. Somewhat tidied up (none of those horrible 'bitly' urls) but the extra 50 or so pages seem to be mostly further examples of legal sagas involving excessive, inadvertent or otherwise unwanted scraping.I was also disappointed that the introduction to the new edition didn't reference the first book at all. This rather suggests the publisher wanted to get something out of the door quickly. Compare with other O'Reilly books where the author discusses the additions to the previous work.Overall, it is not bad as an introduction if you are prepared to play around with the code and look e.g. online when you get stuck. If you already have the first edition, you might look elsewhere for a follow-up.

Sometimes difficult, sometimes broken, worth every penny.
A great book, and covers all the subjects in a concise form. Concise being the key word. For the page count it is jam packed, but be prepared to study the examples and this book will give back what you put in.I am just over halfway through, and learning alot. There are a fair share mistakes, which begs me to ask if every example was tested. None are severe or broken beyond repair. Debugging is a valuable skill, so it checks you are paying attention. The writing is not as accessible as the 'no starch press' publications i have read, but in that style you would be upping the page count.Reccomend, despite the flaws. Looking forward to the second half.

Tolles Buch..

A good book to sharpen my Python skills
In current world, collecting data from the website is very time-costing. Thanks to Ryan Mitchell, who has written this good book.I felt very easier to read the book and practice my python codes. The structures are well designed and organized. I can easily understand the most techniques and methodologies of web scraper. Actually I like this book !
