Exceptional handling of an unfortunate situation
Deuker pulls in most reluctant male readers. As an 8th grade ELA teacher, I have read all of his books, and when placed in the hands of those students who typically do not enjoy books, they become active, engaged readers. I have even caught students "sneaking" reading during class time when they are to be working on another task such as writing. :0) I felt compelled to leave a comment, due to the comment from the "purchaser" who left a one star review. Thanks to YA writers like Deuker, kids have an opportunity to learn about situations that are unfortunately very real. It is especially vital for kids whose parents don't have an open dialogue about situations and topics such as these. This is by no means a graphic account of the abuse that took place. The scenario was not described: no sex on the page or detailed account. Because the act is implied (in fact the reader does not know exactly what happened), it allows the door to be opened for discussion between the reader and the parent, should they choose to seize that opportunity. It is not explicit and therefor does not force an issue or an agenda. Deuker handled his narrative in a way that was about character evolution due to pressures and conflict. He in no way sensationalized drinking or watching R rated movies. After finishing this book, I have decided to order more copies for my classroom. The unfortunate reality is that there are predators in our communities and kids need to be aware of this, and what they can do if they find themselves as a friend of or in the situation of the victim. Deuker also includes some resources at the end of the text for kids in need of support. Very well written and superbly handled.

I am so disappointed in this book
I am so disappointed in this book! I purchased 4 Carl Deuker books for my boys for Christmas because of the amazing reviews. I have 5 sons and was so excited to find books with great sports appeal. My boys were enjoying the books and I was thrilled to think I finally found an author that was writing intelligent books for boys who love sports. That was until my son came to show me a part he was uncomfortable with. It was a scene where kids were given alcohol by an adult and then being allowed, by the same adult, to watch disgusting adult movies very degrading women. Another son was reading a different Carl Deuker book that talked about a boy reading disgusting pornographic magazines, without his clothes on, and trying to get other kids to look at the magazines with him. Nothing in the reviews, and I read almost all of them, said anything about this. He should never have that kind of material put into his hands...especially by his mother. I am disgusted and saddened by the fact that these well written books stooped to such a level. I wanted to leave this review to make it very clear what you are buying. We teach the exact opposite values in our home. I wish I would have had some warning. Wish I could get my money back.

This is my 13 year old son's favorite book. I had leant it to one of my friends and then forgot who, and I had to REBUY the book because my son wanted to reread it. I have also read it and it's a fantastic book. Love it!

Highly recommended for the young and old alike. Characters are relatable and realistic. Plot is almost a must read for every young adult making their way in this world and contemplating hard choices.

Another breath taking novel. Being a coach and English teacher myself, I often find myself recommending Carl's books. His grasp of the game and a good story line always keep my students asking for more!
