Excellent.
I wouldn't swear to it but I believe that I've given 5 star reviews to every book by Sandra Brown that I have read. Considering I just read 10 in a row and know I've read many more than that over the years I'd say it's pretty standard of her books. This one though; completely blind-sighted me. Bam. I was initially thinking it seemed out of her norm and was unsure I'd enjoy it at all, but in the end she didn't let me down in the slightest. I truly loved it and the end was perfect.

A wonderful, gripping story
A story unlike Sandra Brown's usual books, but just as wonderfully written. It keeps you reading page after page of sadness, kindness, friendship, and love. I really enjoyed this heartwarming story.

Worth reading.
I almost put this book down after a couple of chapters, but now I'm glad I didn't.It isn't the greatest book I've ever read and the writing is okay, but not great. It seemed like the author stopped working on it too soon -like she sent in an early version of the manuscript and didn't spend enough time polishing it before submitting for publication. *However*, the prose is easy to follow, and the book is worth reading for the hero alone. He is wonderful! And he is what kept me reading when I wanted to set it aside. As the mother of two autistic children, I dislike books and movies that tell stories of profoundly autistic children who miraculously improve, both because it is rare and because these stories give parents false hope. (Even my two, who were high-functioning to begin with, made progress only through hours of specialized therapy and educational modifications) I thought this book was going to be one of those stories at first, but it wasn't.The book has a bittersweet ending, so have your tissues handy for about the last 10-15 pages. But that said, it is still very much worth reading. I'm glad I did.

A story about abundant life
Sandra Brown is an incredibly versatile author and this novel, set in the depression dust bowl of the 1930s, displays her gift of story telling.

WHAT A TEARJERKER!
I loved the character development, how Solly's autistic characteristics were so truly represented. I am so ashamed of us, as a people, knowing the ignorance and bigotry of the times were so accurately portrayed.

a spellbinding read
This story was fascinating and appears to be based on a somewhat true circumstances of a government program during the depression. It shows that love can overcome the worst that life can throw at you.

Unusual Sandra Brown
As great lovers of Sandra Brown , especially in audio versions read by Victor Sleazac, we reckoned that this would match up to the others. In fact, we think it's one of her best. Moving away from her usual modern day setting to thedark days of American depression in the 30's puts a completely different slant on her writing approach.A beautiful story, well told. Highly recommended.

This Novel is Recommended!
This novel is very different from anything else I've read by Sandra Brown! The timeline of the story (during the depression) made it especially interesting as well as gaining insight into the lives of the people in the region of Texas in which it is set. The character of Solly, as an autistic boy, was described so accurately and the fact that the doctor was aware of the condition and was such a support to his mother was pleasantly surprising to me! The story was gripping, emotional with tense moments. It had me crying in many different parts. I couldn't put it down!

Meisterhaft

Rainwater - portrays a Texas woman's experience in 1934
I was enchanted with this story laid in Texas during the depression. Ella owns a boarding house. Her occupant, Mr. Rainwater, an unusual gentleman, impacts her life and that of her strange 10 year son Solly in a surprising way. The novel involves other characters who help the reader visualize the desperation, hunger and hatred often prevailing at this time. I recommended this book for my book club because it is relatively short, an easy read, and well written. Although some events are violent, heartwarming moments exist.
