Great lessons in this book
This book is an extraordinary tale of intrigue and romance. Sarah, left alone for a few weeks because her parents have to attend to a family matter, discovered a seriously injured man just a little ways from her house. Doing what it took to save the man's life cost her dearly : her reputation, her standing in the community and the church, her family, and an unborn child. This book really shows the end results of jumping to conclusions, being self-righteous and unwilling to listen to reason, pride (of any sort), gossip, and jealousy. It also reveals the dangers of not reading God's Word for one's self and relying strictly on the words of someone else to find out what God said about sin and forgiveness. I would most definitely recommend that this book be read by older teens and adults alike because of the lessons in it.

Great story!
This story takes place in England in the 1800's (I believe). It's a time when rules in the church are rather harsh and unforgiving. Conclusions are drawn and never questioned. In this case, Sarah's parents go to see her mother's dying father and leaves her alone. She finds an injured man and brings him back to her home to care for him. Before all is said and done, she is accused of fornication and thrown out of the church.I liked the book. A LOT. But I never could get over the father. I think he got off way too easily seeing as how he loved his daughter and didn't believe a word she said - took the word of a immoral man over his own daughter...that rubbed me the wrong way. This book mixed suspense and romance together along with history of the church of England and other churches moving in that were more forgiving. I really enjoyed the mix.I did think the story ended rather abruptly, though...

A Historical Romance
The story takes place in the early 1800's and shows how religious zealots can take over the life and love of individuals. Moreover, it demonstrates how the "love of money" can lead to actions which are detrimental and dangerous.Sarah Montgomery and Alan Mellington became friends as the result of Sarah saving his life. Unfortunately, the neighbors misinterpreted the interaction between the two which led to the disavowment and shunning of Sarah by her church and others in the village. The libelous gossip was further perpetuated by Alan's brother Simon as a act of revenge. In an effort to correct the situation, Alan decides to marry Sarah which leads to many other difficulties as well as rewards. The mystery which permeates the entire book is finding out who is attempting to kill Alan and his brother Simon. This is a mystery and romantic tale without all of the sexual detail which seems to be prevalent in novels today. It was easy and entertaining reading for a Sunday afternoon.

Enjoyable, but might not get reread
I enjoyed this book, but felt like something was missing. I liked the main characters and whenever I had a question about the plot, it was explained (I hate loose ends). However, I realized that the story was narrated when it could have been shown - it needed more dialogue between the charaters and more descriptive information about the setting and situation. There was an interesting story line and it was easy to follow, but more conversation and information on the characters' thoughts and motives would have given the book depth. Most often, these things were explained/narrated in a simple sentence or two. Building different levels of depth in a book is what endears readers to a book and is what makes readers want to read a story over and over again. Simply, to me, this book didn't have that.

A great mixture of mystery and romance with a powerful theme.
In a small village near the English/Welsh border in 1838, Somebody is after Lord Mellington's fortune, and they're willing to kill him for it. When their first attempt fails, he is found left for dead, and nursed back to health by a young woman - Sarah Montgomery. This book isn't so much a murder mystery, as it is an attempted-murder mystery (although murders do occur as the story goes on). In a sense I found that this raised the tension. We knew that the killer was still out there somewhere, and would be trying again. This also allowed Sarah and Mellington to develop a romantic relationship that grows over time. The threat of murder added underlying suspense to their relationship. As compelling as the mystery and the romantic plot are, they are almost both sub-plots to the greater story, which is the journey Sarah must take. Having helped save Mellington's life at the beginning of the book, she finds her reputation ripped to shreds as her neighbours get completely the wrong idea and spread insidious gossip that gets her thrown out of the church and shunned by the entire village. The book carries an eye-opening warning against jumping to conclusions, and acting in self-righteousness rather then grace. This book was written in an omniscient point of view. Personally I am not a fan of this point of view, but it was used consistently through-out the book and did actually give the story a certain charm - making it feel like a classic mystery. Clearly his was a decision made very deliberately for stylistic reasons. The mystery aspect was handled well, keeping the reader guessing, and ending with a logical and satisfying conclusion.A great mixture of mystery and romance with a powerful theme.

A lovely short story with some interesting twists; made all the more enjoyable as the setting is only a few miles away, and the characters are based on some people I know!

Poor research
Dreadful, poor facts, badly written. Author clearly did not research this book properly for a crime/romance story. Very disappointing as the summary of the plot was promising.

Light Romance
It takes barely a couple of hours to read this old fashioned romance. Not much suspense, some unrealistic situations... quite like the French author Delly... old.
