Secure, Logical and Reliable - Everything I hoped it would be...
I have the ioSafe 214 with dual 1 terabyte preinstalled HD’s. ioSafe offers that the drive is fireproof and “protects against data loss in fire up to 1550oF, 1/2 hour Per ASTM E119” as well as waterproof which “protects data from flood, full submersion, 10’ depth, 72 hours, fresh or salt water”. If that wasn’t enough they also offer data recovery options. All of this protection is meant to give you the piece of mind that your data is safe, secure and retrievable in the case of a true disaster. While the cost may be high on these drives the loss of pictures, music, business files and other vital digital information is unthinkable. I would rather pay for piece of mind than leave things to chance. There are only a few minor complaints that I have with unit/system but overall this is just a fantastic product. To get it out of the way the feature I feel is most lacking is a way to input data from an external HD via USB instead of having to copy across the network. You can export data from the 214 to another drive but not import. This is not something that is common of any NAS, thus no deduction of points for this NAS lacking it. This brings up my next complaint, transferring data from the drive via what is supposed to be a USB 3.0 did not provide me speeds associated with USB 3, instead it took days. There are really two elements here that make this drive something special; the first being the hardware itself, which is top notch and the second being the Synology platform on which the drives software is based. The hardware is extremely robust; this thing is a tank and will last until the apocalypse. The unit has a very solid front plate with side venting that both seals the drive in and provides some ventilation. Secondarily the drives are sealed inside the drive bay in a very secure fashion. Given the claims of fire and flood protection this makes sense and does seem believable while inspecting the unit. Both the cover and drive bay enclosures are sealed held in place with ‘screws’ that require an Allen wretch to open and close. The nice thing here is that the required wrench is provided. The NAS also has a magnet to connect the Allen wrench to the back of the drive when not in use which is refreshingly logical! The one minor complaint I have here is that the hard drive trays do not use the same screws instead you need a screw driver, minor but it would be nice to have an all inclusive experience for disassembly/reassembly. The fan is uber quite and I never even notice it, which is a stark contrast to the freight train noises that were emitted from the Buffalo Cloud Stor, this replaced. All of the cords and ports seem top notch as well as just the general fit and finish of everything. The drive just looks, feels and functions in the premium fashion that ioSafe has intended. The second aspect here is the Synology platform. Just as the hardware oozes of premium data protection the software follows in turn. What I really like here is that you are able to get as detailed as you want or just easily set up the basics and let the system work for you.The system is easy to access through the provided CD. A minor complaint here is that I don’t have a CD drive on my MBPR and it would have been nice to get the set up software via a download on the site. Once installed the set up is pretty intuitive, router settings can be preconfigured by the device, you can open up external access or keep things within your four walls and even set up access to your phone through dedicated apps. The system provides a simple modern interface for the entire configuration and offers a very usable help and search function to assist along the way. One feature I really enjoy is the auto-indexing for media files which does seem to provide faster access through the network over my previous NAS.I have the Android apps running on my HTC M8 and they work quite well. A suggestion would be to combine the apps into one; I’d like to access everything in one place vs. having a video, photo, audio, file and system app. That said they work I can view photos and videos, play music and access files over Wi-Fi and 4G. This is also in stark contrast to the PogoPlug software of the Buffalo Cloud Stor, which was a train wreck.Overall, this is a very solid unit that I would highly recommend for those wishing to protect their data “onsite” vs. uploading to a cloud storage service. It provides good controls, easy setup and reliable operation. I am quite pleased with the entire package.

It's a monster both in durability and performance
The media could not be loaded. We all know that the best way to protect data from disaster is to back it up and take the backups off site. And the reason of course is that if your office burns down or floods, the very fragile hard drives holding that data will be destroyed along with everything else. The IOSafe 214 is one way to perhaps give your data a fighting chance. This is essentially a fire and flood proof safe that encapsulates two hard disk drives inside connected to a very nicely performing Synology DS214 network attached storage system. And it's heavy - about 30 pounds heavy thanks to its solid metal and ceramic components. The drives are contained inside an airtight chamber that keeps them completely isolated from the exterior of the enclosure. Heat is dissipated through passive heat sinks and a fan that carries the heat away in the back. The fan doesn't make that much noise and the amount of material between the drives and the outside world means there isn't much disk noise either. The Synology DS214 powering the device is an awesome NAS platform, complete with a powerful web-based user interface and very fast read and write speeds. In my testing, even in RAID 1 (mirroring the disks), the drive regularly delivered read and write speeds in the 100 megabytes per second range. This is a great product that combines a very capable NAS with the most rugged storage enclosure out there. If your data needs to be protected this is a great way to do it.DISCLOSURE: IOsafe provided me with this product to review.

Terrific Product
We use this device at customer sites as an alternative to slow and expensive off-site cloud based backups. Unit is bulletproof. Every one we have deployed has worked flawlessly. Thankfully, we've haven't yet had to test its fire/water resistance, but based on IoSafe's delivery on claims, I'm sure it will be fine if the situation occurs. As it employs Synology's server OS, the unit is easy to configure and use. Overall we are very happy that we discovered IoSafe's product line.

This is the best way to properly protect my clients data
This is the best way to properly protect my clients data! The unit is solid and powered by synology. The unit is sturdy and well manufactured! I highly recommend this solution over a traditional NAS. I have been in more than 1 DR scenario in the past which taught me that not only backup was needed, but a enclosed secure/solid/ backup NAS unit was key!

Very good product.. Windows guy that is really liking Synology more
I had a DS1513+ Synology and wanted local protection for fire and water without loosing performance. Not only did I get my wish, but I gained performance with USB 3 ports and faster CPU, very well designed. The best part is I was able to use my existing hard drives to save on money. Since the components were the same I didn't even need to backup any data.
