A ragtag group of Knights Templar hold out for months against the hard-fought siege of Rochester Castle in the thirteenth Century. Set in the time of King John's signing of the Magna Carta treaty, the group struggles against the King to defend the freedom of their country. Judging from James Purefoy's bloody sword, the movie Ironclad is going to be a bloody feast! Review: Brutal and real. Solid movie. - Has a wild line in the movie. A father soon to die in war (thatโs how it felt) tells his small child of a son โwork hard and take care of your familyโ if I donโt come back. Itโs a VERY SERIOUS LINE. To his similar aged daughter he says โbe polite and obey your husbandโ if I donโt come back. Their both childrenโฆ these are his parting words this life time to his blood. Why the line hits hard? Men and Women loath these words. Itโs hard for men to want to work hard, and to give everything to familyโฆ but equally hard for women to be polite and obey the husband. Think the lazy selfish man and the emotionally destructive woman that lives in all of us. The Knight Templar is chasteโฆ a chick eyes him and attacks in her own wayโฆ can he hold his vow? Or should he give in to carnality? While the next battle loomsโฆ sacred energy- Hard core brutality. SO HONEST. This film is HONESTโฆ and I love that. Zero NPC energy in this film. Itโs like a B movieโฆ and great one. If itโs your tasteโฆ. Itโs fantastic. Like a great sports car thatโs not too expensive. Surprisingly good and surprisingly well done... buy it!
Others have written reviews telling most of this film's plot so I'll not retype what's already been said. I will say I was very surprised by the higher-than-expected production quality of this movie given that it was obviously not a mega-budget epic. This is not "Kingdom of Heaven" but it does a superb job of looking like a "big" medieval movie. The acting is very good, the story line is predictable but good as well, and the costuming and historical authenticity, as far as wardrobe and weapondry is concerned, is fantastic. Yes, the Templar does use FAR too large of a sword in some of the fighting scenes, but aside from that, I really didn't see any glaring inaccuracies as far as weapondry and wardrobe were concerned. Typically, yes, the fair maiden is busty and I am aware that ladies didn't run around with their heads uncovered back then, but, movies for some reason, haven't decided to have all the "respectible" ladies wearing head coverings because that's just not what movie goers want to see. It also does amuse me, since I do medieval reenacting as well, how snug the chain mail is (especially on the arms) in all medieval movies, the speed at which characters can get in and out of it, and how effortlessly it seems to be worn - but, that's something you have to experience before you appreciate the historical accuracy of it. If chain mail sleeves fit as tightly as they do in this movie (and every other movie I think I've ever seen), no one could ever get into, or out of, their mail. All that aside, it's a very good flick about a subject that should be better known. Yes, it is gory as everyone has stated. In fact, this is probably THE single most gory medieval warfare movie I've ever watched, but, that's the way it was back then. On the gore-fest subject, however, what you will see here is no worse than anything shown weekly on "The Walking Dead" and nobody seems to have a problem with that. Overall, I highly recommend this one. Would've given it five stars if it had employed a few more extras for the battle scenes assaulting the castle; that's my only real "beef" with the movie. When William attacked Rochester, I'm certain his army looked a lot more intimidating in numbers than the movie portrays, but, this is a minor point. If you like medieval history, if you liked "Kingdom of Heaven" or "Pillars of the Earth" or "Centurian" this movie will not disappoint.

Gritty Medieval Action with Heart and Guts
Ironclad is one of those movies that doesnโt pull any punches. Itโs raw, dirty, and packed with brutal sword fights that actually feel heavy and real. The cast is solid โ Paul Giamatti especially stands out as the villain โ and the story has that old-school grit about honor, loyalty, and standing your ground no matter the odds. The battles are intense, not over-polished like a lot of modern action films, which makes it feel more authentic. If you like historical war movies with a bit of blood and a lot of backbone, Ironclad delivers.

Another medieval movie for the collection
The movie got a lot of flack from critics, but I enjoyed it. Lot's of your medieval action, castle, a little bit of laughing moments, but overall good in my opinion. I enjoyed it and that's all that matters.

Fabulous movie!
And it'll make you flinch, unless you're so hardened to graphic violence and torture that this sort of thing is old hat to you. It's important to know that this movie is based on historical events and takes lots of liberties. Since we have no play-by-play narration of actual medieval events, every movie and book that goes beyond the broad stroke of history to tell a lively story, is in fact, 'based on historical events', so I don't think that's a show-stopper. More, if you have an interest in history, this movie might just get you to do some digging on your own and learn something. All to the good. Purefoy is brilliant as the Templar, both in casting and performance, and Brian Cox adds the right touch of rakish resignation to the end that has to be coming. This movie is absolutely brutal, and that's a virtue in and of itself. Most movies gloss over the results of running-with-scissors (or swords), Ironclad brings it up close and personal. Most movies portray a medieval setting with modern sensibilities, this one gives you a glimpse into what it was more probably like. I see some of the reviewers are hatin' on Kate Mara, and their complaints about her acting ability are fair enough. But if you consider her as what she really is; a pretty, strangely beguiling foil to showcase the conflict within the Templar Knight, she's the perfect fit for the part. She's not meant to be a main character, and she isn't. This is not a movie I recommend to most people. Only my best friends.

Good medieval action movie with good cast
Saw this movie on TV a while ago and liked it. Went through hell trying to find it on the web. Got it from Amazon. James Purfoy is a very good actor and the movie is full of medieval fighting during a siege. If you like medieval movies, this is a good one. Not fancy script but engaging action first 'til last. Brian Cox is in it and he is a first class actor.

I wasn't sure what exactly to expect, overall, Ironclad got mediocre reviews and myself not being a Paul Giamatti, I was skeptical. Thankfully my skepticism was short lived; acting was great, the cast seemed knowledgeable in ancient history, the sets were spot on and era accurate, plenty of realistic and believable gore, overall this was a great movie. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting their medieval movie fix, there are far too few as it is, if you've been thinking about watching or buying it, hesitate no more!

Gritty, meaty, cruel, greasy, tough movie! Oh, and by the way, Good Movie! James Purefoy was great in Rome, he seems to have that physical presence to him. Derek Jacobi always a favorite of mine, does a good job as the castle owner. The Danish mercenary commander I believe was the same actor in the 13th warrior, he does a good job in this. One will really develop a healthy dislike for King John (Paul Giamatta) in this movie, as he really is a weasely, arrogant villain. Brian Cox is similar to his Agamemnon role in Troy, except this time he is a good guy. Very violent, many, many, lopped off limbs. Dirt flying everywhere, thank god this is 2013. I am serious when I say that this movie is like looking through a time portal into the middle ages. I really imagine this is how life (warfare anyway) was back then. One scene that I liked was when James Purefoy put on a crusader helmet and went out to do battle on his horse. I think the main reason I gave this movie a five star rating was because of it's realism, certainly not because it is a pleasant movie to watch, be warned this is not a fluffy romance! Also there is not one shred of humor that runs through this film, but if you are in the mood for a violent, atmospheric, medieval thriller, then tuck-in and enjoy!
