The Elements of New Testament Greek

Easy to follow koine primer, I’m going through it chapter by chapter.

Duff simply and astutely lays out the elements of the Greek of the New Testament (it's on the cover, after all), and does his job admirably. He does not confuse the student with syntactical or linguistic discussions unless they are directly relevant and applicable to simple reading of the New Testament, leaving such content to intermediate grammars, nor does he attempt to make learning Greek more fun and exciting than it already is, cutting down on unnecessary content and distractions. I own Kindle editions of Mounce (The Basics of Biblical Greek), Black (Learn to Read New Testament Greek), and Duff (Elements), and I can say without a doubt that, were I to recommend an introductory textbook to someone, Duff would be my first choice. Duff is simple, concise, and clear, leaving his student with a firm grasp of what is necessary. I am drawn to the conclusion that if one wishes to learn New Testament Greek, Duff is the man for you.

This was the required text for an Elementary New Testament Greek course that I took for a graduate degree. I really don't have anything to compare it to but it was certainly straight forward and provided memorization hints which was so important especially for quizzes and exams. I'm not sure if it has an accompanying guide listing all the verb endings for all of the verbs in all of the tenses, but that would be helpful. Highly recommended for the beginner learner!

I've been on a self study course for about a year now to teach myself N.T. Greek. I have two grammar books and a handful of reference books, it's no doubt a very difficult language to learn, but I am determined even at age 71. A few months ago I bought "The elements of New Testament Greek" written by Jeremy Duff that was originally conceived by H.P. Nunn back in 1914. I studied Nunn's book also. Duff did not write a GRAMMAR BOOK, instead it is truly a TEXT BOOK that only focuses on the grammar and vocabulary needed to read the N.T. Greek. Grammar books present you with everything the author knows about the subject. Duff's textbook gave me those shortcuts and helpful tips to become fairly proficient in understanding how to translate the Greek text. However I realize this is only a beginning step but it certainly has been a helpful boost in the leap toward my goal. Tony

Good, easy to understand. I bought it to help me along on my own due to my Pastor/teacher moving away.

This book is much more straightforward and easier to use than the more common textbook by Mounce. It is presented in a well-organized fashion, starting with simple sentences, and gradually adding cases, declensions, conjugations and other difficulties. Every new topic is accompanied by practice problems, many of which are simplified (or non-simplified) sentences taken from the New Testament. The CDs are not useful; the book stands on its own without them.

The brilliance of this book is that, it teaches grammar based of the most common features of the language, and not the other way around. The answer key is at the end of the book, therefore no need to buy it separately.

This would be a fine choice for teaching New Testament Greek, but the author's decision to remove the accents is unacceptable. Every New Testament Greek textbook will have some flaws, but this one cannot be tolerated. Otherwise the lessons are well-executed, with an excellent first-year vocabulary of roughly 600 words, an efficient streamlining of the material, the proper amount of exercises, and New Testament texts gradually increasing in difficulty. I'm not thrilled with the incomplete treatment of athematic verbs, but this is common in first-year biblical Greek textbooks. Hopefully the author will come to accept that omitting accents is a mistake and issue a revised edition.
